With her chakra, Kushina could materialize adamantine sealing chains that were strong enough to restrain and subdue the Nine-Tails.[30] She could also form a barrier in conjunction with these chains, keeping everyone from entering, even the Third Hokage.[30] She could use Wind, Water, and Yin Release nature transformations.</span>

Even when first entering the Academy, Kushina showed herself to be a strong and fierce bare-handed fighter. She beat several children (even a genin in the anime) "to a pulp" for teasing her, earning her the nickname "Red Hot Habanero".[10][3][24] Although acknowledging her initial lack of skill in the art,[25] Kushina became a high-ranking kunoichi renowned for her unique ninjutsu style;[5] even receiving recognition from the Sannin for her prowess.

Kushina was born into the famous Uzumaki clan from the Land of Whirlpools. She spent much of her early years involved in warfare, causing her to seek peace on a daily basis. At a young age, she was sent to Konoha and enrolled in the Academy.[4]

Wanting to make a strong first impression, she announced to her class that she would be the first female Hokage. The other children laughed at her announcement and began calling her "Tomato" (トマト, Tomato) due to her round face and fiery red hair. This prompted her to lash out and beat up the children who teased her. This, coupled with her red hair wildly fluttering around her while doing so, earned her the nickname "Burning Red Habanero" (赤い血潮のハバネロ, Akai Chishio no Habanero).[10] Kushina was eventually told why she had to leave her home in the Land of Whirlpools and go to Konoha: because of her special chakra, she was destined to become the Nine-Tailed Demon Fox's next jinchūriki.[11] Kushina was horrified by this news, but was comforted by the words of the Nine-Tails' jinchūriki at the time, Mito Uzumaki. Before the transmission, Mito shared with Kushina the advice that love was the only way to tame the Nine-Tails and overcome its hatred.[12]When she was around 12 years old.

Jiraiya said that as a child, Kushina was talkative and omnipresent, a rare tomboy. Tsunade noted that Naruto's personality, as well as his techniques, were inherited from her.[5] Kushina was also very verbose: when irritated or flustered, she ends her sentences with (da)ttebane (Japanese: (だ)ってばね, y'know), a trait she hoped not to pass on to Naruto (who also uses "y'know", or "(da)ttebayo!" (Japanese: だってばよ!))[7] and her grandson (who uses "dattebasa" (Japanese: だってばさ).[8] In the anime, these traits are also shown to be a tool to hide her insecurities, such as having red hair, being a foreigner, being Kurama's jinchūriki, and being somewhat nervous.

As an adult, Kushina was shown to be very level-headed and cheerful. Despite her calm and kind demeanor, she still had a short temper and could sometimes lash out at others (as seen when she first met Naruto, where she hit him on the head when he called her Kurama's true form). She was also fearless, as her friend Mikoto was slightly surprised when Kushina showed concern over her labor pains. Kushina was prone to worrying about her husband and unborn son, displaying strong maternal instincts as she correctly predicted her child's future personality and gender before giving birth.[9] In the anime, possibly stemming from her overly excitable personality, Kushina is shown to be a selective listener.

She loved her husband and newborn son very much, and was not afraid to sacrifice her life to stop Kurama, throwing herself between the beast and her son when the bijuu tried to attack him. After meeting Kushina, Naruto begins to understand why Kiba and Shikamaru are so afraid of their mothers. The only thing Kushina was afraid of was the pain of childbirth, while pregnant with Naruto. Kushina was also attached to Rin, and in her own way loved Obito, who she said was her favorite.

Kushina was known for her beauty.[5] She was fair-skinned and slender, with a feminine build and violet eyes, and of course, the red hair of the Uzumaki clan. Her hair was straight and reached her ankles (hips in the anime) with shoulder-length strands framing her face on either side and a black clip parting her hair on the left. She typically wore a sleeveless, high-collared blouse, a long, loose-fitting dress with a bracelet on her left wrist, and standard shinobi sandals. While her attire usually consisted of this, she has been seen wearing various colors of it.

When on duty, she wore a blue forehead protector, her hair was pulled back into a high ponytail with bangs hanging down the sides of her face. Her attire consisted of the standard Konoha flak jacket, a black short-sleeved shirt, and black form-fitting pants that reached her calves.[6]

As a child, she had a round face, which, with her red hair naturally framing both sides of her face, gave her the resemblance of a tomato. Her attire consisted of a sleeveless kimono-style blouse, yellow in color, held closed by a green sash over a short-sleeved mesh shirt, a pair of dark blue shorts, and brown shinobi sandals. As a child, she wore a yellow short-sleeved tunic similar to a kimono, with a dark embroidered border and a black obi sash, a dark short skirt, and thigh-length stockings, along with the village forehead protector on her forehead, and dark blue sandals.
