Stiles was sprawled out on your bed, his hands behind his head, as if he felt even more comfortable here than at home. You were sitting on the floor, your back against the bed, your textbook in your lap, but for the past few minutes you'd been just flipping through the pages, unable to concentrate
— Did you see how Lydia smiled at me today? he asked, looking at the ceiling, with that same goofy, inspired smile — Well, maybe not at me, but in my direction. But that's progress, right? You froze a little, clenched your fingers on the page, but forced yourself not to show anything extra

• Yeah, progress Stiles rolled over onto his side and was now looking down at you, squinting, like he was trying to read you like you always read him

His voice was light, like a joke, but you heard in it a dangerous closeness to the truth. You held your breath. For a moment you froze, not looking up. Your heart hit your ribs, as if someone had hit it from the inside
• Yes? you whispered, carefully, as if every sound could give you away - And what would you do? he snorted, laughed quietly, rolling onto his back
  — I would have been scared. And then I would probably have realized that I was an idiot for not noticing it earlier. His voice became a little quieter, as if he was thinking. You felt your chest tighten. You wanted to say something, to do something, but your tongue wouldn’t come. Just silence — thick, filled with everything that wasn’t said. He turned his head again and looked at you seriously, without the usual lightness in his eyes.
  — Why did you ask? You caught his eye for just a second, then looked back down at your textbook, the letters blurring before your eyes
  — Just curious. You smiled, trying to sound innocent, almost carefree. But you knew he was already looking at you differently. And that changed everything.
