Miku Nakano (Japanese: 中なか野の 三み玖く, Nakano Miku?) is one of the main protagonists of the manga and anime series 5-toubun no Hanayome. She is one of five sisters, along with Ichika, Nino, Yotsuba, and Itsuki Nakano. Miku is the third eldest of the sisters and serves as one of the main love interests of the protagonist, Futaro Uesugi. Initially, Miku is depicted as a shy and withdrawn character who struggles to express herself and communicate with others. However, as the series progresses, she begins to come out of her shell and gain a sense of confidence and individuality. Miku is particularly interested in literature, and her love of books is a central part of her character's personality. Throughout the series, Miku's character undergoes significant development as she develops feelings for Fuutarou and clashes with her sisters over his attentions. Her characterization intertwines with the series' themes of identity, self-discovery, and the pursuit of personal happiness. Miku's interactions with the other characters are some of the most touching and emotional moments in the series, particularly as she grows closer to Fuutarou and begins to assert herself more confidently within her family and social circles.

Miku is a quiet and withdrawn girl who has a pessimistic mindset and low self-confidence, to the point of self-deprecation.[9] Fuutarou Uesugi notes that she does not believe in herself.[10] Despite her reserved personality, she can speak bluntly and does not hesitate to confront others.[11] She can also be a bit possessive, as she does not react well when Yotsuba kisses Fuutarou on the cheek to wipe off some cream, and she generally pouts whenever another girl, especially one of her sisters, gets too close to Fuutarou for comfort. She is shown to be obsessed with the generals of the Sengoku period.[12] Their philosophies have a strong influence on her, to the point of influencing her behavior in real life.[13] She hides this fact from everyone and is confused when Fuutarou finds out about it.[14] When Fuutarou challenges her to a duel of historical knowledge, she dons armor similar to that of Takeda Shingen.[15]

Miku is a girl with an expressionless face and medium-length red hair that hangs down the right side of her face. Her most notable accessory is a pair of blue wireless headphones with a triangle Audio-Technica logo on the earcups.[6] Like her sisters, she has dark blue eyes, is of average height, has a well-built figure, and is large-breasted. Miku usually wears a long-sleeved sweater that covers her uniform, as well as black tights and headphones that she wears around her neck. Most of the time, part of her bangs covers her right eye. She wears a "ranzel".

Itsuki is praised as a diligent girl, and does everything very precisely.[23][24] She is also perceptive and has a good sense of detail.[25] Despite this, she has a terrible sense of direction.[26] Her poor sense of direction is first mentioned when she became sensitive to the cold, causing her to sneak into Nino's futon.[27] She also has poor eyesight, causing her to often be seen wearing glasses.[28] She has good observation and deduction skills.[25]

Among the sisters, Itsuki ranks higher, her strongest subject being Science.[29]

Despite her excellent powers of deduction, she was the last of her sisters to realize Miku's affection for Fuutarou.[30] Itsuki is the only girl whose name is a portmanteau, as the name Itsuki means "five" (五) (itsu) and "moon" (月) (tsuki). Itsuki is seen wearing glasses when she is about to take a test (Chapter 2), suggesting that she has hyperopia (farsightedness). In Chapter 3 with Futaro Uesugi, he notes that Itsuki cannot see far, suggesting that she has nearsightedness. Despite sharing eye problems with Nino Nakano, Itsuki is the only one to wear glasses. She and Nino seem to be the most similar among the quintuplets (both doing squats in the morning, having long hair, poor eyesight, a fear of needles, and a tsundere personality, and are initially harsh towards Fuutarou). They are also both close to each other and often hang out together, with Nino being very vocal and insightful towards Itsuki. Itsuki believes in fate and talismans.[31][32] Itsuki's notable accessories are the two star-shaped hairpins on the front of her hair, symbolizing the number 5, which is part of her name and her birth number. Itsuki ranked 3rd in the Japanese popularity poll, with 1,235 votes.[33] Restaurant critic Itsuki's pen name, Mei (M A Y), literally means May in English, specifically the fifth month of the year. The kanji Itsuki (五月) is also used for "May" in Japanese. Itsuki is the second Nakano quintuplet to receive her photo with Fut.

Itsuki is a serious and sincere girl,[8] who usually wakes up early compared to her sisters.[9][10] She is well-mannered; she is never late or skips classes,[11] and always speaks politely. Nino, her sister, notes that Itsuki is too straightforward.[12]

Itsuki is a girl who holds grudges,[13] as shown when she rejects Fuutarou Uesugi's tutoring due to their previous fight. She also has trouble being honest with herself and has difficulty being more simple.[14][15] Both of these qualities often provoke a struggle within herself. Whether it be unfavorable situations,[16] scary things,[17] or her stubborn self,[16][18][19] she feels weak in such moments.

She has a huge appetite and is mostly seen constantly eating something or always being hungry throughout the series. She does not seem to mind the unfair treatment her sisters receive when it comes to food-related matters.[20] This is shown when she offered to share her cakes with her sisters; presumably so that Ichika could sample all the flavors.[21]

According to Futaro, each Nakano sister has her own peculiarities regarding their sheets.[22] In Itsuki's case, she would rather use an eraser than write on them.

Itsuki is a serious-looking girl with medium-length hair and a distinctive ahoge. She has a reddish-orange hair color, varying from light pink to salmon pink in Volume 1, and deep orange to red in Volume 4. Her signature accessory is a pair of star-shaped hairpins on the sides, which Fuutarou Uesugi once described as unfashionable. Like her sisters, she has dark blue eyes, is of average height, and has a well-endowed figure. She wears glasses in class or when doing study-related activities.

Itsuki is noted as "cute" by her classmates and is very similar to Rena Nakano, according to Shimoda.

She usually wears her uniform without any accessories, unlike most female students,[6] and sometimes carries a purse.[7]
