history pt10
As the three walked through the Labyrinth, Diana asked Ferdinand if he had ever seen an Amazon there. Ferdinand replied that Clea, a monster who had taken control of the Labyrinth and was hunting Petra, was rumored to be an Amazon. They turned a corner and came face to face with a crowd of Fish-Men and "Queen Clea". Diana knew instantly that Clea was not an Amazon. [7] The Fish-Men attacked, and Diana and Ferdinand attempted to hold them off. They managed to hold off the initial assault, taking advantage of the lack of weapons and countering the Fish-Men's superior numbers. However, they produced a ballista and fired at them down the corridor. Ferdinand dove in front of Diana and Petra, taking the arrows, and told them to flee. Diana took Petra back to where she had entered the Labyrinth and sent her through the portal to Hieron on Earth. She then returned to try to save Ferdinand, if he still lived, and free the others trapped in the Labyrinth. Diana triggered a trap set by Clea's forces, who dosed her with a powerful hallucinogen. Under its influence, she stumbled into Clea's throne room, the center of which housed a shaft leading to a lower level of the Labyrinth. Clea ordered her henchmen to throw Diana into the shaft, but she easily repelled them even under the drug's influence. Instead, Clea ordered them to throw a captured Area 41 scientist into the shaft, knowing that Diana would go after him to save him. As Clea predicted, Diana jumped into the shaft, catching the man before he fell to his death. Suddenly, a fiery figure wielding a mace charged out of the darkness towards her. [ 8 ]

Doctor Poison revealed that Area 41, the secret government facility where she worked, was built on top of an ancient Labyrinth. Many people and creatures were trapped inside: some they had smuggled themselves into it, others were already there when it was discovered. One of these creatures was rumored to be an Amazon. Diana asked for the coordinates to the Labyrinth, and Doctor Poison gave them to her, but warned her that she could not breach its security. Diana then expelled the spiders through a portal to Hell and left, warning Doctor Poison that she would be watching. Diana returned to the Hieron and told her friends that she planned to go to the Labyrinth and search for her lost sister, despite Steve's warnings about Area 41. She used magic to open a portal to the Labyrinth and entered. The portal closed behind her immediately, but left a mark to find her way back. As she searched the Labyrinth, she heard screaming on the other side of a wall. Through a crack in the stones, she saw a minotaur fighting a group of Fish-Men. Unsure of who the aggressor was, she burst through the wall and leaped into the fray. The minotaur emerged unharmed from the Lasso of Nemesis, proving it was innocent, so Diana joined the fight on its side. She asked why they were fighting, and he told her that the Fish-Men wanted Petra, a young mermaid he was protecting. Together they drove the Fish-Men off, and the minotaur, who introduced himself as Ferdinand, told Diana that they needed to leave before the Fish-Men returned with reinforcements.
history pt8
Maze Diana returned to Earth. Through a shell company called Hecate Holdings LLC, she acquired a large tract of land in the forests outside Gate City, blessed by the goddesses. She tasked the birds with scattering and finding the Amazons, then used a spell to create a headquarters known as the Hieron from the site's ruins. While reuniting with Steve, Barbara, and the Candy sisters at their new home, she heard what sounded like a weaker version of the Tetracide's scream coming from the city. Diana flew over and found the people being attacked by robotic spiders, which played a recording of the scream. She tracked the spiders to their source, a skyscraper still under construction, and flew to the top, resisting the feelings of panic, hopelessness, and despair the sound filled her with. On the top floor, she found a figure in a bulky containment suit. They told her his name was Doctor Poison and that they knew where to find the Amazons. [ 11 ] Before Diana would listen to Doctor Poison, she forced her to recall all the spiders, threatening to drop her from the top of the building if she didn't. Diana quickly deduced that Doctor Poison had been given the recording of the Tetracide by the United States Government, which she considered more evil than the Tetracide himself, as he was a mere beast, while Doctor Poison and the other humans behind the spiders had the ability to make other choices. Doctor Poison offered to tell Diana where she could find another Amazon if Diana let her go unharmed, and Diana agreed, but threatened to go after Doctor Poison if she hurt anyone else.
history pt7
hell Diana was returned to the Underworld and placed in the throne room of Hades, the god of the dead. She treated Hades with false deference due to his immense power, but could not hide her mocking tone. However, Hades revealed that he had taken Circe prisoner. [9] Hades threw Diana into an arena like that of "The Lady or the Tiger" and forced her to fight to the death against a chimera. Diana did not want to kill the chimera, but Hades left her no choice. After killing the creature, Diana called upon the power of Themis, the goddess of justice. Themis and the injustice of her imprisonment gave her a temporary boost of power that might have allowed her to challenge Hades. He told her that he was neither a god nor a lord, but merely the guardian of a prison; and that one day her time of reckoning would come. Enraged, Hades told her to choose one of the two doors; Behind one lay certain death, and behind the other, the portal back to Earth. However, if she returned to the world of the living, she would be forbidden to return to the Underworld, and so she and Circe would never see each other again. Tearfully, Cyre pointed to the door to freedom, and Diana opened it, but then she returned and broke Circe's chains. She revealed to Hades how she had eaten a pomegranate seed all those years ago, and because of that, she could always return to the Underworld and Circe for one month a year. Diana took Circe back to the Savage Island and promised to send her a message as soon as she could. She also told Circe that she had defeated the Tetracide thanks to the weapons Circe had given her. history pt6
Steve took Diana to sisters Etta and Gia Candy, as Gia was an herbalist who had the materials Diana needed to recreate her arm. Diana performed a ritual calling on Hecate, the patron goddess of Circe, to create a new arm, then went out to confront the Tetracide again. She found that it had gone far inland to find the people if it could not call her. Diana flew out to sea and used a spell to create sounds of people screaming for help to lure the Tetracide back. As she crossed the water, she summoned the Athena Blade and grew it to the size of a building, allowing her to slice the Tetracide in half with a single blow, severely wounding it, but not killing it. [6] The Tetracide weakened, but began to heal rapidly. To destroy it for good, Diana was forced to use her most dangerous weapon, the lasso Θυσία (Thysía), or "Sacrifice". The lasso transformed any living creature it touched, but instead of using it against the Tetracide, Diana used it against herself and transformed into a giant Medusa. She easily turned the Tetracide to stone, but Sacrifice also transformed her into Medusa's mind and she began attacking the city herself. Steve Trevor rushed outside and was able to help her remember who she was, and Diana returned to normal. She destroyed the petrified Tetracide, ending its threat for good. On the beach, her new allies asked if she was leaving, and Diana replied that she had much to do and wasn't going anywhere. However, suddenly, the ground beneath her feet cracked, and a hand of blue fire pulled her underground. [ 2 ]
history pt5
Diana cast a few spells that would slow the Tetracide, then returned to warn the soldiers about how it killed so they would be better prepared to save as many people as possible. She explained that its first method of predation was the "Death of Fear," when it made a sound that caused humans to lose their fear and be drawn to it to be devoured. Diana went out again to confront the Tetracide and offered it a chance to retreat peacefully. It refused, so Diana attacked it, wrapping it in the Nemesis Lasso, anchored to the creature's flesh by the Athena Blade. However, it drew the blade and broke free, forcing her to attack it head-on. She severed several of the Tetracide's tentacles with an axe, but it managed to grab onto its artificial arm. One touch from the Tetracide on its skin would destroy its mind, so it detached its arm and retreated. On the boardwalk near the beach, it bumped into a historian named Barbara Minerva. Barbara recognized Diana as an Amazon and asked if she was "Wonder Woman," the greatest and champion of the Amazons. Diana needed to get back to fighting Tetracide, but she said they would talk later.
Realizing that she needed to find a way to counter the "Death of Fear", Diana commandeered a newscast and told the inhabitants of Gateway City that she must deafen everyone to protect them. She asked them not to panic and to help each other while the military worked to evacuate them. She then used a magic circle to drastically enhance the effects of a vial of magical liquid, temporarily deafening everyone in Gateway. [ 10 ]
history pt4
Diana discovered a ritual in one of Circe's books that would allow her to send Steve back to Earth, but Circe told her that she could not do it, as it would require a great sacrifice. However, Diana believed that Steve's arrival in Hell was a test to see if she was worthy of being the savior Circe had promised her, and that returning him home should be her first mission. That night, while Circe and Steve slept, Diana cut off her right arm as a sacrifice. This allowed her and Circe to perform the ritual that would send Steve back to the world of the living. Circe created a magical construct to replace Diana's lost arm. [ 10 ] Tetracide Finally, Diana was able to speak the forbidden word: Amazon. Circe revealed to her who she was and how the Amazons had been the protectors of the upper world. She equipped Diana with the most powerful weapons she could create and sent her into the upper world to confront ancient monsters who want to devour the world. [ 5 ]
Diana repelled the first wave of monsters known as the Harbingers, but their leader, the Chief Harbinger, warned her that worse was to come. She met with Steve, who was working for the military again, who took her to meet his commanding officer, Commander Cole. Diana was unimpressed with Cole's bravado and simply ordered him to evacuate an area one mile from the coast, as worse things than Harbingers would rise from the sea within the hour. To Diana's horror, what emerged was the Tetracide, the largest monster of all. She ordered Cole to evacuate the city, stating that it would buy them time to escape. [ 1 ]
history pt3
Artemis sent beasts to the Savage Isle for Diana to practice fighting. Diana refused to fight them for no reason, not even to protect herself; but she did fight them to protect the creatures of the Savage Isle. [ 8 ]
Circe taught Diana magic from a young age and sent her to gather the materials she would need to create an arsenal of weapons. For her final mission, Diana climbed Mount Prometheus, where the Titan Prometheus was being held prisoner. Circe and Diana considered Prometheus humanity's greatest champion, ally, and protector, for he had brought them fire and justice in defiance of the uncaring gods. Though Diana was unable to free Prometheus, she managed to temporarily break his chains and convince the eagles Zeus sent to devour his liver each night to leave him alone. She asked for a sample of his blood to create the weapons she would need to protect humanity from both monsters and gods. Prometheus willingly gave her his blood and resurrected Pegasus to aid her, as he too was furious at the injustice of the world and the cruel rule of the gods. [9] When Diana was young, she found USAF officer Steve Trevor stranded on the shore of the Savage Isle. The hydra that lived in the sea near the shore dragged him underwater, but Diana rescued him and brought him back to the cave. When he awoke, Diana and Circe told Steve where he was, though they were unsure if he was dead or not. Steve was paralyzed with existential terror, but soon pulled himself together. He told Diana that he didn't believe his place was in Hell, and she replied that not everyone in Hell believed that, they just ended up there. [ 1 ]
history pt2
Unbeknownst to Diana, the goddesses had created their own hidden plan within Zeus's, to use Diana to bend the arc of the universe towards justice. Circe's patron goddess, Hecate, informed her of the plan and warned her that one day Diana would leave her to save the world. [6] From then on, Circe told Diana that she would one day be a great warrior and savior of mankind. When she was a child, goddesses began appearing to Diana in her dreams, starting with Artemis. [7] She also encountered Persephone, the reluctant bride of Hades and queen of the Underworld. Persephone was growing a small pomegranate tree on the Savage Isle and told Diana that, like her, the tree was small now, but would one day grow to be large. She also told Diana the story of how Hades kidnapped her and tricked her into eating pomegranate seeds, so that she was destined to spend three months of the year in the Underworld. She gave Diana a single seed from the tree, so that no matter what happened, Diana could always return to the Underworld for one month of the year. Shortly afterward, Circe read Diana a new story from a book Hecate had given her: "The Lady or the Tiger." It told the tale of a princess and her lover, whom her father, the king, had forbidden her to be with. When the king discovered this, he threw his daughter's suitor into the arena and told him to choose one of two doors. Behind one was a beautiful woman who would be his wife, and behind the other a tiger who would kill him, but he didn't know which was which; a choice between a happy life without the princess or certain death. The princess instructed the suitor to choose one of the doors, and he did so. The story ended there, and Diana was upset at not knowing how the story had ended or what the princess had chosen. She thought of that story often in the years that followed.
history
Origins Darkseid created the Absolute Universe to be a world where heroes were underdogs and lacked the advantages of their Earth-0 counterparts. [3] As such, Diana did not grow up on a Paradise Island with a sisterhood of Amazons, but was instead raised alone on the barren "Savage Isle of Hell" by the sorceress Circe. When Diana was a baby, the Amazons committed an unknown offense against the gods. To punish them, Zeus took her from them, so that she would never be reunited with her sisters, and imprisoned them for eternity. Zeus even forbade the word "Amazon," so that no mortal or god could utter it. He had Apollo deliver Diana to the Isle of the Underworld, where Circe had been imprisoned for her own crimes against the gods many years before. Apollo told Circe that she was now Diana's guardian, but gave her no instructions for keeping her alive. Circe initially planned to simply let Diana die of exposure and left her on a rock. A snake quickly slithered toward Diana and tried to eat her, but to Circe's surprise, Diana grabbed it and threw it a great distance. Impressed, Circe took Diana into her refuge and began to care for her. Over the years, as she grew older, beasts, demons, and lost souls came to kill Diana, but she easily overpowered or befriended them until her and Circe's home were filled with them. [4] Circe also quickly came to love Diana as her own daughter, and added more comforts to the cave where they lived to make it a home fit for a child. Together they tamed the Savage Isle until it was the safest place in Hell. As she grew older, Diana began to feel that there was a word she had never spoken, but which was important and powerful.
