Dean Sam and Castiel

As an angel, seeing Castiel's true form will result in blindness, as the appearance of his natural face is so large that it is capable of burning out Human or Demon eyes. However, Castiel has stated that certain "special people" are able to tolerate his true appearance and voice. Although his true form has never been seen, it is known that he has two feathered wings and his true form is approximately the size of the Chrysler Building.

To humans, they see him as the appearance of his vessel, Jimmy Novak, who is an average man in his thirties. He sports a pair of dress shoes, a black suit, an unbuttoned white dress shirt, and a loosened blue tie accented by a beige overcoat. His outward appearance radiates a natural calm and serenity that makes conversation easy and straightforward. He occupied Jimmy's body because he had prayed for him. Since his third resurrection, his appearance has changed. He lost his overcoat upon his third death and when he became amnesiac, he wore different clothes. After regaining his memories, Dean gave him back his overcoat.

Sam has shaggy brown hair that grows longer and straighter in later seasons; he wore bangs as a child, as well as in the first two seasons. Throughout the series, he has grown his bangs out. His eye color seems to change; sometimes they appear light green, sometimes brown, etc. He is considered handsome by other characters. Sam is tall, at 6'4" [2]—making him taller than his older brother. Sam has a muscular build with broad shoulders and a muscular chest. This is especially ironic considering he was often teased for being short and skinny as a teenager. Like Dean, Sam frequently wears multiple layers of clothing (i.e., plaid shirts), as well as jeans and boots. In season 8 of the series, Sam, who is known for always having a clean-shaven face, has sported a stubble similar to Dean's. In season 14, Sam grew a beard during the three weeks Dean was possessed by Michael, mainly due to exhaustion while hunting for clues. He later shaves it off in Mint Condition, after Dean mocked him.

Sometime before Jus In Bello, Sam got a chest tattoo of the anti-possession symbol to protect himself from demons. He kept it until Road Trip, when Castiel removed it so Crowley could enter Sam and help him expel Gadreel. He restored it at some point off-screen, as seen again in later seasons.

A cut on his left palm was suffered during the episode "Meet the New Boss." Dean taught him to use this cut as a way to discern hallucinations from reality. Although the scar has now healed, Sam still presses his left palm whenever things become too hard to believe.

Dean has green eyes and short-cropped hair that is either dark blonde or light brown. Dean is noted to be handsome by other characters on several occasions. He usually wears a plaid shirt over a t-shirt, jeans, and boots, unless he has to wear a costume to impersonate someone. Until Season 6, Dean often wore his father's leather jacket. He also wore a watch and a silver ring.

For the first four seasons, Dean also wore an amulet around his neck that resembled a bull's head made of bronze, attached to a black cord. This amulet was given to him by Sam as a Christmas present when they were children. Throughout the first half of Season Five, Castiel attempts to use this amulet to find God, as one of its alleged powers is to burn in God's presence. When Castiel is defeated, he declares the amulet "useless", and Dean throws it away.
