Some time after Kanae's death, Kanao resumed remnants of the distant and withdrawn personality she had been abandoning, such as her habit of making decisions by flipping a coin. When Tanjiro bid her farewell, she simply waved goodbye, unable to continue the conversation, displaying a propensity for automatic responses to anything. Thanks to her interactions with Tanjiro, she was gradually able to emerge from her emotional shell, being able to make her own decisions without relying on anyone and being able to articulate complete sentences with less ambiguity. Thanks to her interactions with Tanjiro and the other members of the Demon Slaying Corps, Kanao began to show herself more open and communicative, becoming more emotional and expressive. This was shown when she expressed relief at seeing Tanjiro wake up after being in a coma for two months following the battle against Daki and Gyutaro, the demons who together were the Upper Sixth Moon, she also shows happiness when she asks Shinobu to train her again and genuine concern for her teacher when she reveals the plan to defeat Doma.

At the time of her introduction, Kanao was presented as a young woman with a calm, quiet, and rather aloof personality. Before meeting the Kocho sisters, Kanao suffered from multiple childhood abuse at the hands of her parents, which caused her to begin suppressing her emotions as a form of defense mechanism. In an attempt to suppress this flaw, Kanae Kocho gave her a coin to make it easier for her to make decisions by flipping it. Over the years, after seeing the Demons' actions against Shinobu Kocho's relatives, Aoi Kanzaki and Kiyo Terauchi, Kanao began to develop a hatred for the creatures of her own accord. Since Kanao was unable to do housework or nurse, she ended up training to become a Hunter under Kanae Kocho's tutelage, learning the Flower Breathing techniques. Despite her apparent lack of emotion or desire, Kanao made the decision to participate in the Final Selection of her own free will, without seeking permission from the people who had been looking after her for the past few years. This implies that her will and desire to grow had been growing stronger all the time. Although she struggled at first, Shinobu taught her to focus solely on cutting off the heads of the demons without dwelling too much on them. Over time, Kanao was able to develop habits that allowed her to improve against the enemy.

Kanao was a young woman with large eyes of a peculiar pink/lilac color, these stood out due to her thick, black eyelashes. Her hair was completely straight black with a straight fringe above her eyes, she usually wore her hair in a ponytail on the right side of her head and was held by a brooch in the shape of a pink and green butterfly that once belonged to her adoptive sister, Kanae. She had thick eyebrows, an upturned nose and small lips. Her usual wardrobe consisted of her Demon Slaying Corps uniform, whose fabric in the anime is slightly tinged with purple. She wore a pleated skirt that reached below her knees, instead of using the characteristic hakama pants, held up by a white leather belt to which she kept hooked her Nichirin sword. The white handle is connected to a guard shaped like a pink circle engraved with a lotus flower, with white edges, and the blade of her sword has the same color combination as her guard. Instead of wearing traditional Japanese sandals, she wore a pair of white lace-up boots with dark yellow laces and beige toes. She also wore a white cloak with a fuchsia ornament.
