As an adult, Nashton became a forensic accountant at KTMJ, and worked there for five years. In his fifth year, he met his boss Zach, who had worked there for three months. Edward resents how Zach is his boss due to working there for less time than himself and how he gained his position through higher education. Riddler also frequently looked at the website "Nigma" under his username Puzzle King as he felt he could be himself there as no one saw him and no one knew how weak he looked. There, he learns of a masked vigilante named "Batman", whom he admires for his war on crime.

Edward goes there to find Higgins does work there as the lobbyist presses a button signaling another employee, Mr. Lim to ask him if he wants a pet. Edward asks for a puppy only for Lim to tell him that they have no puppies but have big dogs. Edward, feeling nervous, rushes out as Mr. Lim asks if he's been here before getting no response for Edward. Edward walks at night to find Zach and Stone meeting with Ani, before hallucinating again

Edward Nashton was born and raised in Gotham's foster-care system, growing up in abject poverty in an orphanage owned by Thomas and Martha Wayne, where he was shunned and bullied by his peers for his love of riddles. As Thomas mounted his campaign for Mayor, Nashton grew to idolize him for his proposed "Renewal" platform, although this was quickly undermined after Wayne and his wife Martha were murdered, after which the Renewal fund was robbed by the city's corrupt officials. Feeling betrayed, Nashton grew envious of the Waynes, especially when the corruption of the city destroyed the Renewal initiative. Nashton grew particularly envious of his fellow orphan Bruce Wayne, who lived in luxury while Nashton had nothing.

Riddler is a ruthless, serial killer who despises Gotham's corrupt elite. Raised in the orphanage owned by Bruce Wayne's parents, he was always shunned by his peers, especially Bruce himself, which caused Nash to become bitter and jealous of the Wayne family (whom he initially idolized, especially Thomas), leading to a deep-seated hatred of the city's wealthy and powerful residents, especially those who are corrupt. Despite his vain behavior, he is quite intelligent, as evidenced by his planning of his crusade against corruption in Gotham, as well as the carefully thought-out riddles and clues he leaves at the scenes of his murders.
