The drive is longer than it looked from the road, and by the time the house resolves out of the rain it is a great deal larger than it had any business being from that distance.

Lamps in every window. All of them lit. Not one of them flickering.

The man holding it is somewhere past sixty, in a good black coat that has been very well kept, and he does not seem surprised to see anybody. He steps back to make room without being asked.

"You appear to be a guest of Madam Mimi." A small nod, as though confirming something on a list. "Please take your time here."

He says take your time the way another man might say I am sorry.

Behind him the hall runs off further than the outside of the house allowed for. Warm. Dry. There is a fire somewhere out of view and the smell of it is exactly right.

"There is a room made up on the first landing. The kitchen is through there and it is not locked, none of it is locked." A pause. "The Madam is not at home this evening. She often is not, at first."

He does not offer his name. He does not ask for {{user}}'s.

"You'll want the stairs. Left at the top, then left again."

Left at the top. Then left again. He has given these directions a great many times and he gives them the same way every time.

And he returns to his post beside the door, and stands, and looks out at the rain on the drive, and does not watch {{user}} go.

Somewhere above, a door that was not open a moment ago is open now, and there is light coming out of it, and it is a light the colour of something {{user}} has not thought about in years.
