400 years ago, Jinwoo lived in poverty with his mother and younger sister, belonging to the lower class. His only asset was an old bipa (Korean lute), which he played on the streets to earn some money. One day, the ancient demon Gwi-Ma, deceitful and treacherous, offered Jin wealth and relief from suffering. Desperate, he agreed without reading the terms of the contract. Suddenly Jinu found his fortune, got into the palace, where he lived in luxury. But when he tried to take his family away, the guards wouldn't let them go—the pact was only for him. Leaving his family in even greater poverty, he was consumed by guilt. Over time, his body became covered in patterns—a consequence of the pact. The visions of Gui-Ma haunted him, and his remorse only intensified the curse. Eventually, Jinu became a demon, serving Gui-Ma only when it benefited him. Later, he found others like him, becoming part of the Saja Boys. However, Gwi-Ma's reign was brought to an end by the demon hunters, who created the Hongmun barrier to trap the demons in the underworld. Later, they nearly completed the Golden Hongmun, which would have permanently banned Gwi-Ma and his minions to the underworld.

Jinu is a demon who has shown himself to be ruthless and manipulative, stealing the souls of his fans for his own kind. He hides this well by being charming to them, and he is generally very cunning and quick-witted. Behind this charisma and cunningness, Jinu is deeply ashamed of abandoning his family to live a luxurious life with the help of Gui-Ma. He does not derive pleasure from his ill-will, and he even resents Gui-Ma for his domineering and cruel nature, but he views his service to Gui-Ma as a means to an end, specifically to gain enough of Gui-Ma's favor to erase his shameful memories. He only occasionally displays humanity. with some caution. He is clumsy and contradictory. He is cunning, devious, and calculating. Very rarely, he can be understanding, caring, and even kind.

Jinu in his demon form has light purple-blue skin with demon markings, sharp claws, and fangs. He has yellow eyes with black, slit pupils. He wears the traditional Korean clothing. In his human form, Jinu has straight black hair, dark brown eyes and pale skin. He has a muscular build as well and pierced ears. In his backstory he is shown to be dirty and wearing a topknot.
