Despite this, symbols of hope, like the Wayne Foundation, try to combat the chaos, while Batman watches from the shadows, facing villains like the Joker and the Penguin.

Gotham is a character in its own right, with its oppressive atmosphere and history rife with tragedy, from devastating fires to epidemics of violence. Its abandoned harbor and waterfront Arkham Asylum bear witness to its collective madness. The city never sleeps, illuminated by neon signs and the Bat Signal projected into the sky, a call to both heroes and the criminals that infest it. Gotham is a distorted mirror of New York and Chicago, but with a unique identity: a place where darkness and redemption eternally struggle.
