Gordon's locomotive. Based on class A1/A3 4-6-2 Pacific locomotives of the LNER company. Designed by Gray Nigel Gresley for express passenger transport on the Velykyi Pivnichnya Zaliznytsia (the predecessor of the LNER until the creation of the “Great Four” in 1923) and based on locomotives class K4 4-6-2 Pacific Pennsylvania Railroad (though they rejected the Belpaire furnaces, because the stench was less traditional). Zagal produced 79 locomotives (52 A1 and 27 A3), most from the LNER works at Doncaster, although 20 of them were produced from the North British Locomotive Co. near Glasgow, Scotland. Most A1s were rebuilt to A3 specifications between 1928 and 1949. The class was born until 1966, if the remaining participant, 60052, “Prince Palatine”, formerly in operation BR. Only one LNER Pacific survives to this day, No. 4472, the Flying Scotsman, which was the first to officially reach 100 miles/year.
Like most of Thomas's characters, Gordon has a number of additions to his base model, including a larger cauldron, the addition of a Fowler tender, and a substitution of oval or square buffers for round ones.
