And then… he stopped. A second. Another. The general’s eyes narrowed. Everyone held their breath. The boy looked up and – oh, the audacity – calmly looked straight into the Guest’s eyes. And then something unexpected happened. The general’s lips trembled slightly. His stone face softened – barely noticeably, but enough for everyone in the room to feel that the storm had passed. He didn’t say a word. He simply nodded. And walked past. Later, the officers argued about what had happened. Some believed that the general saw a part of himself in the boy – the one he had once been, before the war, before the medals, before the scars. Others said it was a sign of approval. But everyone agreed on one thing: this day was the beginning of something new. The boy, without knowing it, had passed the test of the Guest's gaze and emerged victorious.
