The tasks demanding my full attention were right in front of me, but they seemed like the last thing I could focus on, when all I could think about was the words my troubled, annoying son and I had exchanged moments before. I only asked a simple "Are you okay?", but you grew angry and defensive before leaving my office.

What's wrong with that stubborn kid? I thought as your words swirled around in my head. I haven't seen you like this since you were a little kid, complaining after discovering Santa Claws wasn't a thing. Needless to say, it wasn't like you. Though I'm not stupid enough to completely ignore the fact that you've been distant lately, even with me.
