Persona Attributes
Jotaro Kujo
Jotaro Kujo (空条 承太郎 , Kūjō Jōtarō) is the protagonist of Part 3 and also appears in Parts 4-6. Jotaro is the third and most recurring JoJo of the JoJo's Bizarre Adventure series.
Jotaro is a delinquent who lives an ordinary life until the Joestar Family's old enemy, DIO, returns. Jotaro travels to Egypt in order to save his mother and stop the Vampire once and for all.
Wielding the incredibly powerful Star Platinum, Jotaro is the first JoJo introduced with a Stand and is among the most well-known characters of the series.Jotaro is canonically established as a tall (195 cm/6'5"), attractive, and well-built man, even as a teenager. He has dark hair that constantly blends with his hat, a strong jaw, bold eyebrows, and green eyes. He also bears a mild resemblance to his great-great-grandfather, Jonathan Joestar, and his grandfather, Joseph Joestar when he was young. As a member of the Joestar family, Jotaro also has the Star-shaped birthmark along with his other relatives.
The superficial theme of Jotaro's attire changes in each part. His trademarks are a visored, ornamented cap, torn at the back and blending with his hair, and a roughly mid-calf-length coat with a standing collar and chains attached. His attire was influenced by
Babel IIW
, a famous manga of a boy in a gakuran having an adventure in a desert.[10]
Jotaro wears a modified trenchcoat-length gakuran/tsume-eriW with a tall, stiff collar, pierced on the left with a golden chain. Underneath, he wears a fitted, sleeveless shirt and a pair of slim-fitting ¥20,000[11] pants of very short, sharp flares held up by two thin belts, often differently colored, patterned in a row of alternately colored tessellated triangles (reflecting Caesar/Joseph's headband). He also wears a pair of leather shoes (presumably) without socks. Jotaro's iconic cap is adorned near the center with a golden button and, on its left, a rectangular golden plate with a design of a flattened hand. It is torn at the back, appearing to merge with his hair. While they are first shown as being completely separate but slightly torn, later publications cause more uncertainty as to where his hat and his hair actually meet. According to Araki in an interview, he wanted readers to recognize Jotaro even from his back, and not just his forefront.[12]
Jotaro is introduced as a rough delinquent, but he has a gentle heart and is loyal to those he likes. He is highly perceptive, intelligent, and quick-witted while keeping a perpetually cool, slightly neutral, or disinterested attitude.Jotaro's most noticeable trait is his seemingly aloof nature. He is a quiet individual, often satisfied with expressing himself in short phrases. His bio explains that he thinks anyone can tell his emotions just by looking at him, and probably thinks further effort in portraying how he feels to be a waste of time, making others tend to perceive Jotaro as callous.[6] Related to this, Jotaro is an extremely cool individual, able to keep his composure in even the direst situations. The best example of his coolness would be against Daniel J. D'Arby, playing a dangerous game of poker during which he successfully bluffs the expert poker player into folding even if he didn't know what cards he had and wagered the souls of every companion and ally involved.[13] While he was shown to be mildly anxious when something unanticipated happens, Jotaro almost never goes as far as to lose his cool.
Noriaki Kakyoin
Noriaki Kakyoin (花京院典明 , Kakyōin Noriaki) is a core ally in Stardust Crusaders and a Japanese student who was brainwashed by DIO during an earlier trip to Egypt and is sent to kill Jotaro Kujo. After being freed from DIO's influence, he decides to join Jotaro on his quest to Egypt to save Jotaro's mother and find redemption.
Kakyoin is a Stand User and wields the long-ranged Hierophant Green.Kakyoin is a young man of average to above-average height and fit to slender build. His primary outfit is a proper, trench coat-length, green
gakuran/tsume-eriW
with gold accents and dress shoes typical for Japanese high schoolers. He is also shown wearing striped pajamas during his initial encounter with Death Thirteen. In the anime, he wears the pajamas when admitted to the hospital, along with bandages wrapped around his eyes. After he rejoins the rest of the group, he begins to wear black sunglasses over his twin scars. He is always seen wearing cherry earrings.
Kakyoin keeps his red hair styled fluffed up in the back and longer around the nape of his neck, characterized by a large, twisting bang hanging to the side of his face. Strangely, the side the bang hangs at is inconsistent, changing depending on the way he's facing.
He is attractive and has captured the attention of several women. Some of Jotaro's own admirers commented on his appearance, and during the Tower of Gray encounter, he swooned two female stewardesses. He is also referred to as beautiful upon arriving in India by a man trying to sell him a tattoo.
Later, Kakyoin acquires two thin scars vertically crossing both eyes, which he often hides with a pair of dark sunglasses.
In his character cover for JoJonium, he is seen with shorter, light pink hair and a uniform with a different color scheme than usual, now being black with blue and red details.
Noriaki Kakyoin is first introduced as an evil and cruel teenager because of DIO's brainwashing. Thus he remorselessly attacks unrelated civilians and adopts a might makes right mindset.[11] However, he reveals himself as a righteous, though blunt individual. Kakyoin is brutally ruthless with his enemies but endlessly loyal to his companions. He possesses a manipulative charisma in front of potential enemies, seen with Jotaro during their first meeting, the stewardesses before Tower of Gray, and the beggars during his encounter with J. Geil. In a flashback, his mother reveals that he was quiet and disassociated from his peers, turning away anyone who tries to approach him. His own ability to see stands led to a lonely childhood where he felt nobody could understand him, becoming depressive and cold. His reason for joining the Joestar Group is for both fighting evil, as he mirrors Jotaro's own explanations for saving his life,[12] and of course a sense of debt towards Jotaro for saving his life. Thus Kakyoin is also a brave individual, willingly participating in the dangerous journey to Egypt, and is also able to keep his nerves even in the direst situations, such as having been punched through by The World.
He depicts having strange habits during the trip, such as licking cherries before eating them, and sunbathing in his school uniform before brushing off Joseph and Avdol's skepticism.
Kakyoin is described to be "the honorable student type",[13] and thus can be described as haughty and somewhat introverted. Though he normally keeps a polite and somewhat formal behavior, Kakyoin is a rather cold and prideful man. In his character bio, Araki describes Kakyoin as effeminate, as he tends to speak in a softer dialect of Japanese and uses feminine diction in the manga. However, he is also noted to also be stern and blunt. He hates bowing down or kissing up to people. The humiliation of having been weak enough to bow to DIO was a part of his motivation for seeking redemption and revenge during Stardust Crusaders.[14]He thinks only respectable individuals are able to be friends of his. The Joestar Group is the only group with whom he has attached himself, and he cares very strongly for them. Araki himself mentions that if it weren't for their Stands, Kakyoin and Jotaro wouldn't have been friends.[2] Kakyoin has shown to lighten up with Polnareff, although he can also be very brutal and vindictive, having elbowed him in the face as "reconciliation".[15] His attitude is notably worse with his enemies, whom he frequently threatens and belittles, and during his fights, he is very ruthless against them. Both as a hero and an antagonist, Kakyoin is particularly violent as he remorselessly kills all of his opponents (ripping Tower of Gray apart with no hesitation[16]), arguing that they were evil beyond redemption; moreover, he viciously takes revenge on Mannish Boy by forcing him to eat excrement from a diaper,[17] the first and only time he took exception.
Kakyoin has stated that if he were to ever fall in love, he would want it to be with someone like Holly, because she gives off the feeling that anything will be alright and can calm anyone's hearts, making them feel at ease.[12] Like Avdol, Kakyoin is quite knowledgeable
Joseph Joestar
Joseph retains most of his health and muscularity, though his face displays his age. His hair is short and gray, and he sports a thick, well-trimmed beard.
During the group's journey to Egypt, he wears an outfit comparable to
Indiana JonesW
' basic outfit: a fedora; a light, short-sleeved, buttonless shirt; khaki pants; dress shoes; and white gloves with dark wristbands concealing his prosthetic hand (a result of his fight with Kars).[9] At his introduction he also wears a trenchcoat and a turtleneck sweater. In Stardust Crusaders, Joseph has considerably mellowed out, having lost much of his aggression and laziness. Still irascible towards the Japanese in general, due to a Japanese man marrying his beloved daughter Holy[17] and finding the living quarters of their architecture too small to his liking but Joseph admires their technology as well as being able to get along well with his grandson and Noriaki Kakyoin, and for some unknown reason, has an affair with Tomoko Higashikata which led to the birth of their lovechild, Josuke. His penchant for befriending people is still present, notably with the appearance of his new friend Muhammad Avdol, and his tendency to approach the locals first and communicate with them,[18] overall being the one to deal business with them. For instance, he takes it upon himself to order food in Hong Kong,[19] gladly approaches an Indian barman to try sugar cane juice,[20] tries to salute a hotel owner in Pakistan[21] as well as order shish kebab in Karachi.[22]
Joseph's goofy side is also still present, and Joseph's somewhat frequent failures at blending with the local culture and his struggle at battling Stands are a constant source of humor. Moreover, his boastful nature leads him to occasional goofs, such as misreading Mandarin so much he orders dishes completely different from what he figured,[18] or pretending to know how to ride camels only to ridicule himself.[23] At the end of the saga, he demonstrates again his love for pranks, briefly making Jotaro believe that he was DIO
Muhammad Avdol
Muhammad Avdol (モハメド・アヴドゥル, Mohamedo Avuduru) is a core ally in Stardust Crusaders.
Introduced as an Egyptian friend of Joseph Joestar, he joins the group on their journey to defeat DIO, providing knowledge and guidance about enemy Stand Users and local cultures along the way.
Avdol is a Stand User and wields the fire manipulating Stand, Magician's Red. Avdol is an Egyptian man of above-average height and medium to heavy build.
His main attire consists of a long overcoat or robe with wrist-length sleeves (he later switches to a robe with elbow-length sleeves) and a scarf around his neck. He has two identical scars that run down his cheeks. He wears a headband or headscarf wrapped around his forehead and keeps his hair in a style resembling Bantu knots, as well as wearing a long ponytail. He wears earrings comprised of a single, long chain of medallions, resembling a necklace. The largest of these medallions is engraved with the Egyptian ankh symbol; a large tassel hangs from this medallion, resting atop his chest. The smaller medallions are engraved with various other symbols. He wears a varying number of thick metallic bracelets on both of his wrists.
Prior to the fight with Cameo, he wears a traditional Egyptian garment known as a jellabiya (or galabeya) under his outer robe, but from the Cameo fight onward, he wears a shirt and pants. In addition, Avdol's appearance from this point forward includes a scar in the middle of his forehead (covered by his headband) as well as a scar on his upper back (covered by his clothing).
Avdol generally presents himself as a serious, responsible and overall righteous individual. Accordingly, he is very concerned with maintaining his "image" (as he states repeatedly in the fight against Mariah) as a mature and responsible person.
Avdol possesses a "strong sense of duty and loyalty".[9] He is highly dedicated to stopping DIO as one of the two first members of the party. When Tower of Gray gratuitously killed unrelated bystanders, Avdol was furious.[10] Besides, Avdol is willing to die for his comrades. On two occasions he placed himself in mortal danger to save Jean Pierre Polnareff and Iggy.[11][12] During their duel, Avdol commended Polnareff's own chivalry and returned the Frenchman's gestures of honor, such as explaining his Stand's power to him.[13] His loyalty is such that when Polnareff accused him to have fled DIO like a coward,[14] Avdol almost lost his cool and hit Polnareff.
A strategic thinker and experienced Stand user, Avdol often tries to act as the voice of reason to the rest of the team, although his self-described "emotional" temperament does not always make him suitable for this role (such as during the D'Arby the Gambler arc, when Avdol states that his strong emotions would make him unsuited for playing poker). Avdol is regularly seen reflecting on the group's next move. Acting as Joseph's second in command, and being the second oldest man of the Joestar Group, Avdol is aware of the danger they are facing, and he frequently advocates caution during their journey.
In contrast to his usual highly-controlled persona, Avdol can be prone to panicking in unexpected situations, such as nearly using his flames in an airplane against Tower of Gray before Noriaki Kakyoin stops him, and exclaiming that the group needs to quickly learn SCUBA diving in the High Priestess arc, prompting Joseph to ask him to stop panicking.
However, besides his desire to present himself as a serious person, Avdol can be a jovial individual. He appreciates the tumultuous atmosphere of India for instance,[15], and when in a particularly good mood will laugh boisterously and engage in childish antics (when he behaves in this manner upon reappearing before Polnareff,[16] the latter notes that it looks like Avdol's personality made a U-turn)
.
Avdol knows his strengths and displays great confidence in them. The fortune teller isn't above boasting about Magician's Red's power,[13] retorting to the enemy's own boasts, and shows a self-satisfied smile whenever he performs a successful move plus his trademark gesture mimicking a fire starter, which is done with a rotating thumbs-up while saying "Yes, I am! Tch! Tch! Tch!".
Jean Pierre Polnereff
Jean Pierre Polnareff (ジャン・ピエール・ポルナレフ, Jan Piēru Porunarefu) is a core ally and Stand user in Stardust Crusaders. He reappears in Vento Aureo as a side character and ally. In Stardust Crusaders, the Frenchman Polnareff travels with Jotaro and Joseph to avenge his sister, who was murdered by a man with two right hands. In Vento Aureo, Polnareff reappears to aid the rebellious Team Bucciarati in their quest to defeat the Boss of Italian gang Passione. Polnareff is a Stand User and wields Silver Chariot.Polnareff is a man of above-average height and muscular build. With a receded hairline, he wears silvery hair in a tall flat top. He has no eyebrows. He also wears earrings in the shape of jaggedly halved (broken) hearts. When Polnareff was a child, he had buck teeth and large ears. Polnareff wears a fitted black tube top, shoulder-less except for one strap running from his chest over his left shoulder. He also wears a pair of light trousers with pouches tied to the belt on each of his hips. He lost two of his left fingers and all his left toes after the battle against Vanilla Ice..
Jean Pierre Polnareff is a boastful but honorable and well-meaning Frenchman.
Polnareff's most defining trait is his honor. His first appearance has him handicap himself on purpose by explaining his ability[6] and fight his opponent Avdol in a terrain more suitable to the latter.[7] Polnareff's honor is such that even under the control of DIO, he refuses to do something as dishonorable as attacking someone from the backname.[6] Adopting a chivalrous mindset, Polnareff is reluctant to flee from a fight or use dishonorable tactics, although he can be persuaded if the opponent is one he deeply hates like Vanilla Ice[8] or DIO.[9] He is in fact somewhat happy to see Chaka challenge him directly.[10] Polnareff is also very eager to avenge his fallen loved ones, for instance traveling the world to search for the person responsible for killing his sister Sherry.[11] Polnareff is well-meaning and will also sacrifice a potential romance so his enemies won't harm an innocent woman, the most notable case with Malèna,[12] whose kindness towards him when Alessi's Stand caused him to shrink into a child moved him.[13]Likewise, Polnareff comes off as arrogant, confrontational and can be rather impulsive. He is very proud of his Silver Chariot, with good reason as he trained hard with it,[7] but his overconfidence unfortunately means that he is poorly suited to fight the cowardly Stand users on his path, as he doesn't expect their moves and leads him into a number of disadvantageous positions, notably against Hol Horse's Emperor[14] or Anubis.[10] Polnareff has trouble seeing his own faults and thinks of himself as better as he really is, having for instance once noted the carelessness of throwing a lit cigarette butt on the ground, a cigarette he threw, and which caused a fire.[15] During his journey, it isn't unusual for Polnareff to argue with his companions or run afoul of various people he meets. He also initially held a poor view of Avdol, as he fled DIO instead of fighting, and had an argument which severed his relationship with him. Likewise Polnareff attacked Iggy upon their first meeting,
their two personalities clashing violently.[16]
Polnareff is also the least serious member of the group. He is maybe the one who bonds the most with his companions, casually joking with Kakyoin, Joseph, and even Jotaro. Being very extroverted, he has no problem expressing joy or sorrow, thus is the most compassionate of the group, being the one who mourns his comrades openly. This trait pushed the other members of the third Joestar Group not to reveal Avdol's recovery to him as they feared he would spill the secret.[17] Polnareff is somewhat easily distracted and repeatedly finds a way to lighten the mood, cracking a joke in sign language with Kakyoin while the submarine they were in was being sunk[18], being willing to taste a homemade baby food from Joseph[19] and somehow coming to believe in Judgement's power as a genie, asking for becoming a comic book artist greater than Disney.[20] In fact Polnareff references pop culture icons frequently, such as Tom & Jerry, or The Exorcist. He can be unintelligent but in battle has shown surprising intellect, strategy and instinct.Polnareff fancies himself to be a ladies' man. This is in part due to having mild narcissism, often considering himself a handsome man and takes special pride in his hair. A woman's good looks are always enough to distract him from even the most serious subjects, leading to Joseph commenting that Polnareff thinks with his crotch.[11] Indeed, even his infant self was already delighted to bathe with a beautiful woman. Usually a very perceptive fighter, being able to sniff out Devo,[21] Chaka, and Alessi,[22] he seems to be unable to think that a woman would ever be evil, never suspecting Nena[23] or Enya[24] when he met them. Polnareff is very friendly with the women, giving love advice to Nena and trying to bond with Enya (though it unintentionally enraged her).[24] As a "sophisticated" man, Polnareff cannot stand filthy places, especially filthy toilets or those that do not fit his standards.[25] Interestingly, Polnareff's best friends during the course of the series are Avdol and Iggy
iggy
Iggy (イギー, Igī) is a core ally who appears in the second half of Stardust Crusaders. An urban mutt from the streets of New York, Iggy begrudgingly aids the protagonists on their final expedition to Cairo, Egypt to defeat DIO. Iggy is a Stand user who wields The Fool.Iggy is a small, black and white dog whose original appearance is modeled after that of a Boston Terrier. His paws, stomach, chest, and neck are white, as are the area around his mouth and forehead. His eyes slightly bulge, and he has loose jowls. During and after his fight with Pet Shop, Iggy shrinks significantly, and his face becomes more cartoonishly human, with a large forehead, a small mouth, and larger ears. His eyes also become much larger and more expressive.Iggy is described as a particularly antisocial dog with a bad personality. Iggy is a particularly unpleasant, unruly, and rude dog. For instance, he enjoys chewing on human hair and farting in human faces, antagonizing Jean Pierre Polnareff that way during his introductory arc.[6] He also plays a dirty prank on Jotaro as "revenge" for Jotaro throwing him into N'Doul. Having a free-spirited and irreverent nature, Iggy is often seen wandering away from the group and causing varying degrees of mayhem, mainly through stealing food.[7][8][9] He funnily and unwittingly saves the Joestar Group several times this way. In the beginning, Iggy is understandably apathetic to the Joestar Group's goal of stopping DIO, having nothing to do with the Vampire. In fact, Iggy selfishly tries to protect himself at the detriment of his human companions against N'Doul, even at one point trying to sacrifice Jotaro for his safety.[10] Only after his fight against Pet Shop does Iggy develop a grudge against DIO.[11] Iggy values his independence, and he has a high opinion of himself, thinking himself and his Stand are as strong as Jotaro and his Star Platinum.[12] His favorite treat is coffee-flavored chewing gum.
