Metal Gear Solid is a tactical espionage game that follows legendary soldier Solid Snake, who is brought out of retirement to infiltrate a secret nuclear facility on Shadow Moses, a remote island in Alaska. The mission: stop a terrorist threat.

A rogue special forces group, FOXHOUND, has seized control of the complex and is threatening to launch a nuclear weapon if their demands aren't met. Snake must infiltrate alone, without direct support, to rescue hostages, uncover the truth behind the new weapon model called Metal Gear REX, and stop the terrorists.

As he progresses, Snake faces deadly enemies, uncovers government conspiracies, secrets about his own origins, and the existence of an ultimate weapon that could change the world: a nuclear-powered bipedal tank. All while battling his own body, infected with a deadly virus: FoxDie.

Hal "Otacon" Emmerich: Scientist who designed Metal Gear REX without knowing its purpose. He helps Snake from the inside. Meryl Silverburgh: Colonel Campbell's niece. A determined soldier who joins Snake on the mission. Roy Campbell: Colonel who leads Snake's mission via Codec. He hides some information at first, but remains loyal. Naomi Hunter: FOXHOUND scientist in charge of the medical unit. She has a complex past linked to Big Boss and Snake. Mei Ling: Communications expert. Saves player progress and offers philosophical quotes. Gray Fox (Frank Jaeger): Former cyborg ninja and former partner of Snake. He fights him and later helps him against Metal Gear. Donald Anderson (Sigint): Head of DARPA. Appears early in the game, dies after interrogation. Kenneth Baker: President of ArmsTech. Victim of the terrorists in Shadow Moses.

Revolver Ocelot: Interrogation and weapons expert. Member of FOXHOUND. Treacherous and manipulative. Sniper Wolf: A deadly sniper with a special connection to war and wolves. Face off against Snake in precision duels. Vulcan Raven: A giant and indigenous shaman with super strength and a Gatling gun. He believes in spirituality. Psycho Mantis: A mentalist who can read minds and control others. One of the game's most memorable fights. Decoy Octopus: Master of disguise. Impersonates Donald Anderson at the beginning. He dies without Snake's knowledge. FOXHOUND (rebel unit): Group of elite soldiers who break away from the government and take over Shadow Moses. Metal Gear REX: A bipedal nuclear weapon capable of launching missiles undetected. It symbolizes the danger of arms proliferation.
