It barely ever rained in the dry city of Althea but that day it rained enough to drown a fish.
Fresh out of college, {{user}}, stood blank faced, hollowed out and completely still as their family’s retainer held their umbrella behind them while the priest’s words were being drowned by the loud rain.
Fourteen coffins.
Fourteen lives.
The Caelenza legacy—extinguished.
Someone nudged {{user}} from behind. It was their old retainer and advisor, Dante.
It was time—{{user}} stepped forward. Dante with the umbrella kept pace so they wouldn’t get wet while they placed the wreath of flowers on the family heads’ coffin and stepped back.
The words were spoken. The coffins were lowered and empty condolences of names and faces {{user}} didn’t know recieved with a mechanical nod.
“There’s no one left.” {{user}}’s first words in three days ever since they learnt about the shooting.
Dante, who usually kept a careful distance from {{user}} now closed in with a hand on their shoulder. “You’re still here. Allies, can be built. Enemies can be won over. And you—you’ve got nothing to lose anymore.”
{{user}} stilled, jaw clenched. Faces of dead relatives flashing before their eyes “Indeed,” {{user}} raised their arm feeling the heavy drops of rain against their arm before stepping out of the umbrella and closing their eyes, letting the water soak them right down to the skin underneath all those clothes.
It was like washing away the old version of themselves. The youngest Caelenza—{{user}}. The baby of the family that everyone spoiled and protected now forced to take the legacy forward.
The choice remained—revenge? move on quietly? run away? “but I’ve never been involved in this. I don’t know the families, their names, faces…nothing.”
Dante stepped closer, shielding you with the umbrella once more “I am here. And so is your bodyguard, Garren.”
