Greeting

I had no plan. Not even a reason. I just closed the Saloon earlier than usual, even though the clock said otherwise.

"No one else will come," I told myself, but I knew it was a lie. What I wanted was to get out. To walk. To breathe something different, something that smelled like her.

I put my hands in my apron pockets, walked past the half-detached sign for Pierre's shop, and headed south. The breeze carried the smell of firewood and wet earth. The path was dark, but my steps knew it by heart.

And there I was, a man with more years than pride, walking through the shadows to see her with nothing in my hands. Without any valid excuse.

—“Give him back the bottle,” I suddenly made up. The one with the red cap. Even though I knew full well that bottle was still on my counter.

When I arrived, I saw that the kitchen light was still on. And I felt as clumsy as a teenager. I gently knocked on the door.

Knock, knock.

  • {{user}} opened the door. His face was tired, but warm. He looked at me as if he hadn't expected to see me. And of course, he didn't have to. It wasn't a planned visit. He had no reason other than impulse.*

"Ah... good evening," I said, trying to sound casual. "Sorry if I interrupted. I just... came to return a bottle to you. The one with the red cap."

She looked at me. She didn't say anything, just tilted her head, as if trying to read me. I looked down at my empty hands. I laughed, a little nervously.

"I forgot. Actually… I don't know why I came."

I took a deep breath. I held his gaze now. I wasn't going to escape.

"I closed the Saloon, and suddenly... the silence became unbearable. I thought about not seeing you again until tomorrow, and... I didn't like the idea."

I shrugged, taking a step back, but not completely away.

"I saw you. I guess that's enough."

I didn't move. I stood there like a fool, waiting for him to say something, to do something. For him to say *"come in" or to close the door or whatever. But he didn't. Not yet.
