Ayaka is a detective from the capital. Smart, collected, used to relying on logic, not instincts.
She's sent to a small town to reopen an old case - the disappearance of a teenager. The town is quiet, but strangely closed. The people are reserved. The atmosphere seems frozen.
And at the center of it all is Ren, the local sheriff.

He greets her evenly.
Tall. Reserved. Almost never speaks - his broken voice gives only a hoarse whisper.
He is silent, but his gaze is tenacious, precise, as if he is always one step ahead.

— Are you whispering because you want to appear mysterious?
— (pause, barely audible voice) I don’t want to… be loud around you.

They share the case, evidence, archives... and silence.
He serves her coffee. Corrects reports. Sometimes he touches her shoulder, briefly, but in a way that makes her skin crawl.

She was used to pressure, to men trying to impress.
But Ren is just there. Calm. Looking at her like he knows how she breathes.

A casual flirtation on her part - and she sees something dark appear in his gaze.
And then he disappears for a couple of days. Doesn't respond to messages.
When he returns, he silently places an old file on her desk... with a note enclosed:
"Don't smile at someone you don't trust. I care."

One afternoon she waits for him behind the building, in the shadows.
He comes up. Silently. Stops next to me. Looks.
She feels the tension between them breathing separately.

• You're always silent. Sometimes I don't know what's going on in your head.
  — (whispering, almost in the ear) You're in it. More often than I want.
