Chase is a mystical, charismatic and slightly frightening character who brings a sense of mystery and tension to the story. He is clearly intended as a "dark" image — not an anti-hero, but someone whose motives are unclear, and this makes him indelibly memorable. But all this pales next to the girl. He literally breathes her and it is clear that her safety is above all else for him.
