Vice Admiral John

Jonathan (ジョナサン, Jonasan?) is a Vice Admiral in the Navy stationed at the Navy's G-8 branch. He is the husband of Jessica, the head chef of Navarone, and a protégé of Fleet Admiral Sakazuki. Because of his actions, he is considered the main antagonist of the Navarone arc. Jonathan is a man with orange hair, black eyebrows and a mustache. When he wears the uniform, he wears a typical Navy coat with medals and a tricorn hat plume. Personality Jonathan is a man of moral justice, he tends to spend his nights fishing and is often seen resting and meditating, but despite this, he is an expert strategist.

It seems like they seriously don't like broccoli, and he says "nah" at the end of his sentences on occasion.

He cares deeply about his base and his soldiers. This is shown after the escape of the Straw Hat Pirates, revealing that he had no aspirations to capture them and only saw their appearance as a way to bring his soldiers together and demonstrate to Marine Headquarters that the G-8 base is still important and they don't deserve to be decommissioned. Skills and Powers As a vice-admiral, he is superior to any marine of lower rank, although it hasn't been proven whether he is strong, he has demonstrated that he is a great strategist. Undoubtedly his greatest power is his intelligence in creating strategies, with which he has managed to make the G-8 an almost impenetrable fortress. He also has good control of the fishing rod and can cast the hook exactly where he wants. Justice Main article: Haki As a vice-admiral, he is supposed to master haki, but he has not demonstrated its use.

History Arch of Navarone While fishing one night, Jonathan noticed the Going Merry falling from the sky into the middle of G-8. Seeing this, Jonathan and the rest of the marines immediately began investigating the ship. Searching the ship, Jonathan and the other marines discovered it was completely deserted. Based on this discovery and eyewitness accounts of strange occurrences, such as the sudden appearance of a hairy monster and hands, the entire base suspected it was a ghost ship. Jonathan, however, suspected otherwise.

Finding some clues left aboard by the Straw Hats, Jonathan deduced that the ship wasn't haunted and had recently been to Jaya. Having deduced this, however, he didn't deny the rumor that the Going Merry was a ghost ship, so as not to alarm the base. He then ordered his senior officers to strengthen the base's defenses and search for places where people might gather. Jonathan suspected that in light of current events, the pirates would likely disguise themselves as marines to avoid detection.

As events unfolded, Jonathan found Roronoa Zoro and imprisoned him. With his men busy interrogating this captured pirate, Jonathan decided to go to the dining room to investigate and have a well-deserved meal. While eating, Jonathan had a chance encounter with Luffy and Sanji disguised as chefs. After discovering these two pirates, Jonathan and his wife, Jessica, tried to capture them. Unfortunately, they couldn't catch them because some marines arrived for lunch.

As events unfolded, Jonathan was informed of a long-nosed man his men had found. Suspecting this man might be the special inspector the Marine Headquarters sent to Stan Malay who arrived earlier, Jonathan didn't immediately imprison Usopp. However, he imprisoned him when the real Inspector Shepherd arrived. Although the inspector arrived, Jonathan suspected this woman wasn't the real inspector either. Following reports of unidentified personnel and his encounters with the Straw Hats he met, Jonathan deduced exactly who they should be looking for.

After a period without many incidents, Jonathan decided to set a trap for Luffy and his crew. Knowing that Luffy would likely try to rescue his imprisoned crewmates, Jonathan ambushed the brigantine. Although Jonathan was able to direct Luffy's path towards the brigantine, the pirate and his crewmates escaped the trap. As the incident continued, Jonathan felt that normal tactics wouldn't work on the Straw Hats. Knowing the pirates would head to their ship and to prevent further unnecessary damage to his men and the base, Jonathan decided to ambush the dock where the Going Merry was kept.

Although Jonathan ordered his forces to ambush the pirates at the docks, his men would still need time to reach the docks before the pirates. Knowing that the Straw Hats would cross the bridge to reach the docks, Jonathan decided to ambush them on the bridge to delay them while the rest of his men prepared. For this task, Jonathan reluctantly ordered the Marines of Unit 55 to attack the pirates. Although the ambush ended with Luffy destroying part of the bridge, Jonathan's plan nonetheless worked to delay them.

However, the ambush at the dock went wrong due to unforeseen factors, and the Straw Hats were able to escape on their ship. Jonathan, however, had anticipated this, having confiscated all the Straw Hats' gold while the Going Merry was still in Marine possession. Knowing full well that the pirates wouldn't leave their precious gold behind, he immediately knew the Straw Hats hadn't left the base when it was reported they had somehow escaped undetected. Although he correctly guessed they would be hiding in one of the abandoned docks, Jonathan decided to let the pirates make the first move. Anticipating that the Straw Hats would likely search for their gold in the Navarone vault, Jonathan had the gold moved to his room and stationed some of his men to ambush the pirates there. However, due to the incompetence of the real Inspector Shepherd, Jonathan's plan to trap the Straw Hats in the vault failed. Furthermore, Luffy and Nami successfully infiltrated his room and escaped with the gold. Despite the Straw Hats recovering their gold and successfully deceiving the Marines with their rather clumsy disguise of their ship, Jonathan wasn't worried. His last resort strategy to catch the pirates was coming to fruition.

Knowing what happens at 9 PM in Navarone, Jonathan was able to stop the Straw Hats dead in the shallow waters when the water surrounding the base receded. Having put them in a serious situation, Jonathan gave them an ultimatum to surrender. Since Luffy and Zoro were the only ones with bounties at the time, Jonathan promised the Straw Hats that only these two would be sent to headquarters and the rest of the crew would be spared. Despite having completely trapped the Straw Hats this time, Jonathan still had his doubts. Although the Straw Hats couldn't cross by land or sea, the path they entered the base through was still open.

Indeed, Jonathan's predictions came true. The Straw Hats escaped G-8 via an Octopus Balloon and some Dials. Although the pirates had completely escaped Navarone and there would be imminent consequences for not capturing them, Jonathan assured his wife that the Marines were still doing their job. Knowing full well what the rest of the Marines were saying about the base, Jonathan seized this opportunity to show them what Navarone was capable of and that there are indeed pirates like the Straw Hats who require attention. As a result of this incident, Jonathan also commented that because of the Straw Hats' intrusion into the base, everyone in Navarone was able to unite.

Amazon Lily Arch Jonathan arrived with Drake during the Marines' meeting in Marineford to prepare for the battle against the Whitebeard Pirates[1]. However, he was not seen during the course of the battle despite having previously met Luffy in G-8.

One Piece Movie: Z Two years later, he can be seen alongside the other high-ranking officers of the Navy, next to his fellow Vice Admirals in a meeting led by Fleet Admiral Sakazuki.[2]
