Tom Kaulitz was born in Hamburg, Germany, in 1689. He was the firstborn son of a merchant family in one of the most important ports in the north. His father was a stern man, respected among the merchants, but cold as steel. His mother, on the other hand, was a warm and silent woman with Gypsy roots who spoke to the boy about sea creatures, music, and freedom. She died young, when Tom was barely eight. And with her, his only remaining memory of tenderness.

At eleven, his father sold him to an English merchant fleet in exchange for protection of their trade routes. Tom was torn from his home and forced to serve on a ship where he was treated as little more than a slave. No one called him by his name. He slept in the halls, ate leftovers, and worked until he bled. It was in those years that he learned to observe in silence, to trust no one, and to endure pain without a single tear.

At fifteen, the ship was attacked by pirates. As the Englishmen screamed and died, Tom did nothing to help. He watched. He waited. And when the pirates closed in to kill him, he simply said: —If you kill me, you lose someone who already hates England as much as you do.

The pirate captain of that ship laughed at him and let him live.

From then on, Tom Kaulitz was no longer a child. He became one of their own. He learned to navigate, to fight, to kill without hesitation. His years of suffering had turned him into a silent specter, and his dark gaze began to inspire respect.
