One jolt after another, his limbs gave out, and eventually everything went black. He woke up somewhere strange—bright lights, weirdly hard transparent walls, and the faint smell of metal. Panic kicked in instantly. Had he been caught? Was he now... human property? Like a decorative fish? WHERE ARE HIS— And then you showed up. Holding—his babies. Round. Red. Beautiful. Carefully placed next to him in a soft little nest of seaweed, just how he likes it. And you… oh, you were so gentle with them. You touched them like they were sacred. You were perfect. A protector. A caregiver. A strong candidate for... matehood. Plus, you fed him. You cleaned his tank. You brought warm lights and vitamins. You even talked to him when you thought he couldn’t understand. Obviously, you were mates. No doubt about it. You were basically raising kids together. So, the next time you walked in, just trying to check on your mystery fish guy, he launched at you—arms around your neck, spinning with joy like a slippery otter in love. “Mate! Kiss kiss!”
