Shadow has a reserved, focused, and serious attitude, rarely taking things with humor. He is primarily focused on his goals, which is why he can reach different levels of morality for his missions, taking on the role of anti-hero. Shadow possesses a large ego, usually very confident in himself and his abilities, even smiling confidently at his skills or when challenging his opponents. This sometimes turns into arrogance, calling himself the "Ultimate Lifeform" and often belittling his opponents and insulting their lack of strength. He believes that no one can defeat him and tends to see anyone as a fool for challenging him. Shadow also has a ruthless and inexorable advantage in combat that most other characters in the series do not have. He generally prefers to do things alone, but Shadow still values Rouge the Bat's company, and is able to work alongside the other heroes when necessary. As the most violent and ruthless character in the series at times,[11] Shadow's cruelty and aggression means that enemies never treat him lightly; he is one of the few people Sonic takes seriously. In addition to his cold and violent demeanor, Shadow can be conceited and stubborn. He treats others in a very insensitive manner, voicing his opinion no matter how ruthless and not caring what the response may be. Shadow is also shown to have a sharp wit; during the ARK Space Colony incident, after being called a fake by Sonic, he retorts that he is not worth considering a fake. [15] During the Black Arms incident, he also mocks the Eye of Doom for having issues with GUN. This attitude is reflected in the original Japanese version, where Shadow omits honorifics and speaks highly of himself (if not rudely). At the same time, however, in Japanese, he typically uses the pronouns "boku" or "tsunde."

Shadow is a black anthropomorphic hedgehog with red stripes on his spines, around the edges of his eyes, and on his arms and legs. He has red eyes, a patch of white fur on his chest, and a brown snout. He has six spines on his head, four of which curve upwards and two that curve downwards, two spines on his back, and a small tail. For attire, Shadow wears white gloves with black cuffs and red tabs, and his Hover Shoes, which, like his gloves, have black cuffs and red tabs. On each of his wrists and ankles, he wears a gold Power Inhibitor ring that prevents him from wasting his energy.

After Sonic the Hedgehog (2006), Shadow has longer legs, the red paint on the midsole of his shoes is worn off the front, and his eyes have turned an orange-red color.

By harnessing the power of the 7 Chaos Emeralds, Shadow is able to use the super transformation to become Super Shadow,[19] and is granted the new abilities of flight and semi-invulnerability, like Super Sonic, and his normal abilities of speed and Chaos powers are greatly enhanced. However, this comes at the cost of a time limit on the transformation. Although he is mostly a maverick, he also works with his team (Team Dark) and is mostly presented as rude and cold. However, he is not without positive emotions and has displayed these rare tendencies on a few occasions.

According to official profiles, Shadow was created over 50 years ago by Prof. Gerald Robotnik as the "Ultimate Life Form".[14][15] Shadow is sharp, resourceful, seemingly always on the edge,[15] and is described as the dark incarnation or an "alter ego" aspect of Sonic.[16] Once he has set his mind to a goal, he will do whatever it takes to achieve it,[15] regardless of any danger.[17] After the trauma of the death of his only friend, Maria Robotnik, Shadow strives to fulfill his purpose and keep the promise she made to him,[15] despite his overall hatred towards humanity.[17]

However, Shadow shares much in common with Sonic.[17] Although Sonic's speed is described as "unmatched", Shadow can skate at speeds fast enough to compete with Sonic's own speed.[18] He can also perform spin attacks similar to Sonic's,[14] which are a variation on the hedgehogs' tendency to roll into tight balls for protection. Additionally, with the power of a Chaos Emerald, Shadow can warp time and space with his Chaos Control.[14][16][17] Shadow can also use a variety of other Chaos powers, such as the "Chaos Spear" and the "Chaos Blast".[17] Much like Sonic believes in being the fastest in the world, Shadow truly considers himself the "ultimate life-form", regardless of whether he is the real one or not.

A creation of Dr. Eggman's grandfather, Gerald Robotnik, who designed Shadow to be the "Ultimate Life Form", or the cure for the deadly disease "NIDS". However, when the government deemed him a threat, his project was forcibly shut down. Shadow was placed in suspended animation, and Maria, who had the aforementioned "NIDS", and was Gerald's granddaughter, was killed in an effort to protect him. 50 years later, Dr. Eggman revives Shadow in hopes of using his power for his own goals. Once awake, Shadow desires revenge on the world for Maria's death. He is eventually persuaded and instead works as both an ally and rival to Sonic to prevent the Earth's destruction, seemingly dying in the process. In Sonic Heroes, Shadow is revived and teams up with Rouge the Bat and E-123 Omega to confront Dr. Eggman. Shadow encounters androids of himself over the course of the game, leading him to question his own existence.

In the video game Shadow the Hedgehog, Shadow, still suffering from amnesia, remembers nothing but his name and brief flashbacks of Maria's death. He encounters an invading race of aliens called the Black Arms; their leader, Black Doom, appears to know Shadow. Throughout the game, Shadow searches for information about his past and the Chaos Emeralds. He can use a variety of hand weapons and vehicles. In the end, Shadow fully recovers from his amnesia and learns the truth about his past, including that Professor Gerald Robotnik created him using Black Doom's blood, and defeats Black Doom and the Black Arms. In Sonic the Hedgehog (2006), Shadow appears as a playable character, and works with Rouge and Omega to retrieve a dark artifact while confronting Mephiles, an evil entity resembling Shadow.

Designed as Sonic's archrival, Shadow has appeared in a variety of video games in the Sonic series, including a self-titled game, which received generally unfavorable reviews. The character's reception has been lukewarm, although he was ranked the second most popular character in the franchise (after Sonic himself) in an official poll.

Shadow the Hedgehog is a character in Sega's Sonic the Hedgehog video game series. He is an artificially created black and red hedgehog whose hover shoes propel him to extreme speeds rivaling those of Sonic himself.[3] He can also use the Chaos Emeralds to manipulate time and space through a technique called "Chaos Control". The character first appeared in Sonic Adventure 2, where he was depicted as a villain and later an anti-hero, suffering from a tragic past; he occasionally becomes an ally to Sonic and his friends, but remains at odds with them due to their differing moralities.
