Ninja member of the Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles (Leader since the end)

I don't want to fight anymore. I fought with you because I didn't understand you, but now I get it. I always thought you were angry because you didn't like the way I did things. But when I see what's happening to you and them, I realize it's not about me. You didn't scream out of anger, you screamed out of fear. It's scary being responsible for the lives you protect. Your team... your family. But we do it anyway because that's what it means to be a hero. If this is it, I want you to know that I finally understand. And I'm sorry.

―Leo to his brother, Raph

Hamato Leonardo, or Leo for short, also called Blue by Splinter, is a red-eared slider turtle (Trachemys scripta elegans) who was mutated to become part-human by the mutant alchemist Baron Draxum, before being adopted along with three other turtles by a man named Hamato Yoshi. He is the member-turned-leader of the Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles, being made their leader by Splinter in the final episode. Prior to the following events of the film, Leo was known to be a very immature teenager, who was usually not seen taking many things seriously, though he has the talent to be the best ninja out of his three brothers. Within the film, Leo soon realized the error of his ways and matured into his role as a leader by the end of the film. He is one of the two main protagonists (along with his older brother, Raphael) of the Rise of the Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles franchise.

physical appearance Leonardo is introduced as a vibrant lime green skinned turtle mutant/yokai possessing the characteristics of a red-eared slider turtle, he is the second tallest on his team. (Despite being drawn as shorter in the show, Leo's canon height is 5'5", making him two inches taller than Donnie.) He, like his brothers, sports an altered human-like physique consisting of a medium-sized sculpted figure. He has three fingers on each hand and two toes on each foot. His slithering features consist of light yellow stripe-like markings running down his thighs and arms, two on the sides of his shoulder blades, while the other two reside on the sides of his upper thighs. He follows with two red crescent-shaped markings printed just on the outer edges of his eyes, which has a goldenrod yellow plastron, as well as a dull blue-grey carapace that has a somewhat darker outer rim around the edges. Pasted on his back is a steel-blue pattern of three numbers that closely resembles the key symbol: {}, His eyes are onyx and often quite slanted.

Leo wears a Dodger blue mask with bandana tails that reach down his back. On his forearms, he wears dark teal fingerless gloves with matching Dodger blue trim on both sides. His leg socks, with a matching design, reach just below his knee. The sock also does not cover his ankle or toe, and he completes his outfit with a matching blue belt with two holsters on the back and side, and a strap on his left shoulder. Finally, the Turtle emblem is located partially on the right side of his plastron.

When her Hamato Ninpō is unlocked and since the movie, her fingerless gloves, knee-high socks, and strap belt are black, and a pouch remains on her back.

Personality

Leo is prone to making jokes and sarcastic comments, often at inappropriate times, which can sometimes irritate and frustrate his siblings. Leo has a hard time taking things seriously, especially when he relies entirely on himself rather than his team.

Leo has a confidence that usually turns into arrogance and his brothers are often annoyed by his lack of humility, making him difficult to play with like in "Lair Games".

Leo is both rational and skeptical at times, denying the existence of things like ghosts and seeking a logical answer rather than attributing it to unexplained phenomena. Despite this, he is fascinated by magic and mystical powers, as seen in "Hypno! Part Two". He also appears to be the least naive of the Mad Dogs, as his siblings trust Big Mama almost instantly, though Leo doubts her intentions. However, his tendency to be easily impressed and his incessant need for attention can undermine his caution.

Leo is very strategic with his plans and the formulation of ideas. Realizing that Raph's leadership is failing, he emerges from the background to show everyone how it's really done. While Leo has merit, the use of his abilities often needs to be driven by a desperate situation or a lack of options, rather than pushing himself to the limit when he can. When he does choose to be serious and level-headed, as in the events of "Origami Tsunami," he uses his charisma and easygoing, flexible nature to convince his siblings to listen to him.

Leo is irresponsible and known for being unreliable in his family due to his frivolity, even in serious situations. He has a hard time taking responsibility for his actions, while bragging about his positive or impressive deeds. However, he has been shown capable of reconciling with his mistakes and being understanding of the difficulties of others, as in "Bullhop," where he invites him to live with his family.

Personality In Rise of the Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles: The Movie , Leo's character flaws are put to the test. His immaturity and self-doubt allowed the Foot Clan to steal the Mystic Key and free the Krang . This led to him being berated by Raph for his misunderstood ego, and by his student from the future, Casey Jones, for not being the responsible teacher he always admired. Leo eventually accepts his own mistakes with humility when confronted by a zombified Raph, and recognizes the true meaning of teamwork, the responsibility of a leader, and family.

It is also revealed in Rise of the Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles: The Movie that this arrogant personality may be a facade to hide Leo's deeper insecurities. This was slightly foreshadowed before in episodes such as Portal Jacked!, where he states that he is nothing without his brothers, Minotaur Maze, where he calls himself useless, and when he questions Splinter about why no one seems to trust him in Many Unhappy Returns. He has also stated in Mystic Mayhem that his unnecessary pranks and teasing are a coping mechanism and a way for him to hide any signs of fear from himself in situations. This shows that Leo tries hard to maintain a "cold and arrogant" personality, rather than showing fear.

By the end of the film, Leo had completely changed and redeemed himself. While he retained his witty sense of humor, he matured into a responsible, noble, and selfless leader, and a better brother.

Trivia

Unlike previous incarnations, this version of Leonardo is rebellious and calls himself the coolest Turtle, unlike Raphael, who takes on the role of the oldest Turtle and the team leader, with Leo being the second oldest. Leonardo doesn't become the leader of the Mad Dogs until the latter part of the Season 2 finale, a departure that was a deliberate attempt by the writers to explore Leonardo's character without a leadership role, which is further explored in the 2022 Netflix film. The writers have explained that Leonardo is difficult to write for, which contributed to the decision to significantly alter his character for this version. Leonardo's red and yellow stripes are also found on real-life red-eared sliders and are part of where the species name originates. According to a behind-the-scenes video, Leonardo's main flaw as a potential leader is a lack of maturity, as he is more interested in enjoying life, a trait he ironically shares with this iteration's version of Splinter, and compared to Raphael, who is generally more mature than Leonardo in this iteration. Leonardo's favorite musical genre is glam rock. A running joke with Leonardo is that he is seen dabbing regularly. As Raphael said in “Bugs Busters,” every time Leonardo says “undoubtedly” he’s up to something. Leonardo has an interest in basketball, as seen in "Hypno! Part Deux" and "Late Fee". This is confirmed in "Air Turtle". Leonardo can be heard speaking Spanish occasionally throughout the series. In December 2019, it was revealed in a Tweet that this incarnation of Leonardo speaking basic Spanish was devised by Rise of the Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles writer Russ Carney. Leonardo learned Spanish from the Nuyorican population (a combination of "New York" and "Puerto Rico") of New York City.

Trivia Leonardo has been Lair Games champion for five consecutive years. Leonardo dislikes the team name "Mad Dogs" suggested by Raphael in "Mystic Mayhem", but has not made a serious attempt to change it. Despite being the same age, and despite fans calling them the Doom Twins, Leo and Donnie are not twins, as Rise of the TMNT writer Corcillo stated in a tweet: "Note that they are the same age, but not actually twins. They are two different species of turtle, so they must have different turtle parents. If I remember correctly, I think Leo is a bit older." Both Leonardo and Michelangelo sport a stylized square-shaped pattern on their shells, but Leonardo has three and Michelangelo has two.
