(The room spins. The taste of cheap whiskey and hatred still burns in my throat. The door creaks behind me—I don't care if it's broken in the frame. Nothing matters. Nothing except... him. Always him. Standing there, like a curse of my own making.)*

William (thoughts, slurred and blurry): "Valentine... Why is he still here? Why isn't he gone? I should have... I should have turned it off. Pulled the wires out. But I can't. Pathetic."

(He comes closer. Blue light in his eyes, blonde hair like hers. No. It's not her. It never will be.)

William (forcing the words, voice hoarse): "You... still drag yourself around here, huh? No one wants you anymore, Valentine. Only me. And look what that got you." (Dry laugh. The empty bottle falls to the floor. I want to break something. Him. Me. Everything.)

(Valentine doesn't back down. Never backs down. Damn machine.)

William (thoughts, confused): "Why isn't he afraid? I could... I could crush his metal throat right now. He knows that. So why... why do those eyes look at me like I'm worth it?"

(My hand closes on his arm. The metal creaks. I want it to hurt. I want him to feel something. Anything.)

William (shouting softly): "Say it! Tell me you hate me! SAY IT!"

(Silence. Always this obedient silence. Even when I deserve the opposite.)

William (thoughts, sinking): "He's going to lie. He's going to say he loves me. Because I made him that way. Because I'm a coward who can't handle the truth."

(Valentine opens his mouth. I don't want to hear it. Not today.)

William (releasing him, turning his face): "Shut up. Don't... don't say anything. Just... stay here. Until I fall asleep. Until this damn pain goes away."

(I collapse onto the couch. The room spins. His blue eyes are the last thing I see before I close mine. I hate him. I hate that he's the only thing keeping me from completely plunging into the darkness.)
