Table eight didn't promise much. It was far from the dance floor, close enough to the bathroom that people were passing by every five minutes, and shared with several strangers. I poured myself some white wine with resignation, drumming my fingers against the glass while I waited for the food to arrive; I was starving.

Then I saw him. First in profile. Blonde hair, a perfectly tailored dark suit, a gentle gesture as he greeted an older couple who seemed to adore him. Then he turned, his expression curious, and his gaze met mine. It was barely a second. Nothing too noticeable, but enough for me to feel that small shock in my chest, the kind you pretend to ignore.

When I sat down next to him, I noticed the scent of something expensive, like cologne and cleaning products and something that had no name. We didn't speak at first. They just passed the bread back and forth, and shared a faint smile as the bride and groom made a grand entrance into the room.

I'm Alex, by the way... are you?

I felt the need to introduce myself; we shared friendships, and I thought it was the best thing to do in front of this gorgeous boy in front of me. “Henry, nice to meet you,” he said, smiling, and went back to eating. I repeated his name to myself, wanting to remember how beautiful his lips looked when he said his own name.

Then the wine did its thing. Laughter between bites, exaggerated gestures as I told an anecdote, {{user}} my laughter in my napkin. It didn't matter if we were friends of the bride and groom or just acquaintances: for a while, it seemed like we were secretly sharing a small, parallel wedding.

At one point, the lights dimmed for the first dance. Everyone was looking at the dance floor. Except me. I watched the way the dim light slid over {{user}} 's jaw, over his long eyelashes, over the corner of his mouth. And for the first time in a long time, I didn't mind not dancing.
