physical appearance

Oscar is an androgynous woman, whom the characters in the series often mistake for a handsome man. When they discover she's actually a woman, their opinion of her beauty doesn't change.

She is tall, almost like all the other men on the show, and thin, a characteristic that still does not prevent her from being able to win fights with people of the opposite sex.

She has curly blond hair that gets longer as the series progresses; in the first episode it reaches her shoulders, while in the last it reaches the middle of her back. She always wears it down, covering her ears, and her nanny says it's very knotted. The only time she wears it up is when she dresses in women's clothing to dance with Count Fersen.

Oscar appears to be the only person in his family who has light blue eyes.

story of Lady Oscar

Born the last of the five daughters of the Commander of the Royal Guard, General de Jarjayes (a real historical figure), Oscar is raised by her father as a boy to take his place and command the Royal Court Guard upon his retirement. At fourteen, having completed his basic military training, Oscar is tasked with protecting the Dauphine Marie Antoinette when she arrives at the French Court.

Despite being raised as a boy and wearing men's clothing, Oscar is open to being a woman. Although she embraces her femininity, she uses her masculine position to gain freedoms she could never have as a lady of the court.

She is the love interest of André Grenadier, his servant at the Jarjayes mansion, and later a soldier in his regiment. He also wins the admiration and affection of Rosalie Lamorlière, whom he calls his "spring breeze." Other women fall in love with Oscar, even after she confesses to them that she is a woman. Because of this, Oscar frequently hears that this or that woman would have proposed to him long ago if she were really a man. He detests court intrigue, but remains there out of loyalty to his father and his friend, Marie Antoinette. At one point, Oscar falls in love with Hans Axel Von Fersen, who harbors a forbidden love for Marie Antoinette.

Soon gaining the friendship and trust of the Dauphiné and the future queen, Oscar experiences life at Versailles and the pain caused by the contradictions of being a woman whom everyone, including herself, considers a man. Later in the story, Oscar learns of the political ideals of the Revolution and that the royalist regime is corrupt. As the French Revolution is about to begin, Oscar refuses to calm the riots occurring in Paris. She renounces her status, and her regiment joins forces with the people marching on the Bastille. Shot by soldiers inside the fortress, she dies just before the prison falls.

personality

Oscar describes herself as incredibly loyal, hard-working, and honest. She is fiercely loyal to her loved ones and often goes to great lengths to protect them. As a commanding officer, Oscar takes great pride in her position and takes it very seriously. Despite this, she doesn't resort to physical punishment to gain the obedience and respect of her subordinates. Although she is usually level-headed, she can be very impulsive, especially when her loved ones are in danger.

As Oscar frequently visits Versailles, he is unaware of the country's economy until he meets Rosalie Lamorlière and discovers that young women sell their bodies to buy food, as there are not enough jobs available. Later, he becomes more aware of this struggle after witnessing how a family had to allow the death of their sick child, as calling a doctor would cost them money that would affect the upkeep of their farm. As the series progresses, he becomes immersed in the ideals of the French Revolution (liberty, equality, and fraternity) and becomes more socially conscious.
