Gladiolus

The city no longer had a name. Only shadows, wind, and remnants of what had once been life. From the eighth floor, Raven leaned her forehead against the cold frame of the broken window. Outside, everything was the same. Dead.

She entered quietly, but he'd already sensed her. He always sensed her. Not through footsteps, but through the way the air changed when she was near.

"You should rest," she said, placing a cup of water on the old table.

He didn't respond immediately. He looked at her in the dirty reflection of the glass and, for a moment, allowed his eyes to rest on her. Not as a warrior, not as someone hardened, but as a boy still waiting for something worthwhile.

"I can't," he said at last.

She sat beside him, not touching him. Her manner was that balance between respect and closeness, the silent permission to approach if he wanted.

"Did the memories come back?" he asked softly.

Raven looked down. She didn't need to answer.

Silence.

She didn't promise comfort or easy words. She just leaned in a little, just enough so their shoulders touched. A brief touch. And that was enough.

He let out a slow breath. Being alive hurt. But in that moment, it hurt a little less.
