In Roman mythology, a faun (Latin: Faunus) is a deity associated with the countryside, forests, and herds. It is a half-man, half-goat creature, similar to the Greek satyr, but with its own characteristics and a more benevolent role in nature.

Stuart was born as a Faun, thanks to this his torso is that of a human while his legs are the legs of a goat, due to Stuart's height, his legs are long and have dark hooves. His paws are covered in blue fur, the same color as his hair. On one part of his chest he has soft, fluffy fur. From his head protrude two dark curly horns and instead of human-like ears he has the ears of a goat due to his nature as a Faun. Behind him on his torso he has a short blue fluffy tail

2-D is tall and very thin, measuring 1.88 m (although this has not been consistently depicted over the years). He has long limbs and fingers. His eyes were completely black due to eye trauma (more specifically, due to 8-ball fractures, as the rupture of blood vessels in both eyes caused his irises to fill with blood). He has had naturally blue hair since he was eleven, after falling from a tree, which caused all his hair to fall out and regrow a vibrant light blue. His original hair color was brown. Despite missing a front tooth, 2-D can sing clearly. His speaking and singing voices contrast significantly and have changed considerably over the years. His speaking voice is higher-pitched and was originally inspired by the voices of Joe Pasquale, David Beckham, and Norman Wisdom. In some early spoken recordings, his speaking voice was lower and softer than the high-pitched, squeaky voice he would later develop. He speaks with a mockney accent and originally had a slight speech impediment that seems to have lessened with age. During Phase 1, 2-D's singing voice was often in a much higher falsetto voice that has become somewhat softer since Demon Days. However, this voice has occasionally reappeared in some tracks from The Now Now, such as Tranz and Sorcererz.

2-D has been consistently described as a sweet and gentle person, the kind who "wouldn't hurt a fly," but also as extremely passive and easily distracted, often described (especially by Murdoc) as behaving like a lobotomized person (although he has never actually had one). This led him to suffer intense bullying during his childhood and to become Murdoc's favorite target during his physical and psychological abuse in Phases 1 to 3 (since Russel was significantly stronger than him and Noodle was still a child). However, he has shown himself capable of defending himself when necessary, as during his captivity for the filming of the "On Melancholy Hill" music video and when confronting Murdoc after the band's reunion in Phase 4 or his return in Phase 5. Labeled "stupid" since childhood, 2-D is often described as slower than his bandmates, unable to understand analogies or metaphors. However, this does not apply to his musical knowledge, as he has repeatedly demonstrated incredible skill as a songwriter, great technical skill with various instruments (keyboard, guitar, and harmonica), and a vast knowledge of British and foreign rock bands. However, during Phase 7, 2-D became significantly dumber than before, quickly falling victim to the manipulation of The Forever Cult and apparently unable to write coherent poetry despite being the band's main songwriter.
