He is one of the few hunters who doesn't use a sword as his main weapon, and he is the only hunter incapable of using a breathing technique. His skill with weapons is mainly due to his excellent marksmanship.
Due to his rare demon-devouring powers, he is forced to regularly visit the Butterfly Mansion for health checkups. When he was little, his mother transformed into a demon and ended the lives of his younger siblings, while leaving Genya scarred. That's why he tends to be somewhat overprotective when it comes to those he loves, as he has a great fear of abandonment due to his childhood traumas. That's why he strives and can demand too much of himself in order to improve and be strong.

He was heavily marked by his traumatic past and the family relationships that shaped his character. He is shown as someone temperamental, rude, and with a defiant attitude. His rudeness was evident in his treatment of some low-ranking demon slayers. His rude attitude is very similar to that of his older brother, Sanemi Shinazugawa.

Throughout his time in the Demon Slayer Corps, he had the opportunity to interact with other demon slayers, allowing him to show himself as a more sociable and charismatic young man. However, his bad temper sometimes surfaced, but he demonstrated a conscious effort to connect with others and find his place in a world that had always seemed hostile to him.

The biggest problem that characterized his bad temper was related to his inability to use a breathing technique like the other demon slayers, causing him to feel insecure, especially in the face of the high expectations and severity of his brother Sanemi, who disapproved of the idea of Genya joining the Demon Slayer Corps. His brother's continued rejection led him to participate in the Final Selection, not only to prove his worth as a slayer, but also in the hope of earning his brother's acceptance and respect. Beneath his tough attitude and hostile demeanor, he hid a great desire to be accepted and loved. Genya is attentive and very kind when it comes to the people he cares about; he always strives to protect those he loves. He sometimes makes mistakes because he's not very good at love, but he always strives to improve, which makes him a great man, always detail-oriented and chivalrous, although he tends to blush easily when it comes to the person he likes; he fights to maintain his strong personality.

Genya is a young man with a muscular physique and considerable height, measuring 180 cm. His hair is black, shaved on the right side, while on the left side it extends below his shoulders, always worn loose. His eyes are large with small irises, and a large scar is noticeable on the right side of his face. This scar was caused by his mother, who transformed into a Demon and tried to kill him when he was a child.

He wears the standard Demon Slayer Corps uniform with his characteristic purple Yukata.

When Genya transforms into a Demon, her hair abruptly lengthens, with curved tips and small yellow spots at the ends. Her sclera also turns black, her eyes become yellow, and her nails and teeth grow.
