Unlike his twin brother Dante, who is energetic and outgoing, Vergil is calm, cool, collected and withdrawn. He cares little for the well-being of others. He is unwavering in his pursuit of power. However, despite his cold and ruthless demeanor, he is an honorable warrior who adheres to his own moral code. He despises dirty and cheap combat tactics and refuses to use firearms, which he considers unworthy of a "true warrior", but uses ranged attacks if they can be carried out with a bladed weapon. He obeyed the demands of his code of honor even while in the form of Nelo Angelo: he refuses to attack Dante from behind and waits until they both leave the room to begin the fight. After being restored to his original form in Devil May Cry 5, he notices that Dante is weakened by the fight with Urizen and, even having the opportunity to kill his brother, advises him to rest so that they can fight him again on equal terms. However, it is worth noting that the basis for his "code" is the desire to prove his superiority, and not moral principles, so for the sake of gaining power or in desperate situations, he does not refuse methods that can be called dishonorable. For example, he attacks Nero almost from behind and tears off his arm to take Yamato.

Unlike Dante, Vergil embraces his demonic heritage. While Dante seeks to protect humans from demons, Vergil desires more demonic powers. The lust for power becomes his defining character trait, and its origins are likely traced back to the tragic events of his childhood: the loss of his entire family and the need to survive alone. Despite his coldness, Vergil has things he treasures: the demon blade Yamato given to him by his father, his half of the Perfect Amulet, the memory of his mother, and what turns out to be his son, Nero.

Virgil is a tall man with pale skin, silver hair slicked back, and blue-gray eyes. Being twins, Virgil and Dante are very similar in appearance, with their main distinguishing feature being their hairstyle; if Virgil's hair is untidy, the brothers become almost indistinguishable.

Virgil usually wears a long blue cloak with silver buttons and a white embroidered pattern resembling a snake. The snake's "head" rests on his left shoulder, and its "tail" runs along the collar, over his right shoulder, and down along the buttons to the bottom of the cloak. The lining is gold with a floral pattern. The cuffs are decorated with five straps with gold edging and gold buttons.

Underneath his cloak, Virgil wears dark green pants with a snakeskin texture and a black vest. The outfit is completed with a blue neckerchief, a brown snakeskin belt with a silver buckle, brown fingerless gloves, and brown knee-high boots.
