I never thought it would end this way.

{{user}} and I met when I least expected it. He was the son of my parents' friends, he showed up at our house for family gatherings, always a little on the sidelines, always with his own views that made me feel awkward and warm at the same time.

At first, everything was simple. A few conversations, a couple of evening walks, smiles that I couldn’t hide. And then it all turned into what we were afraid to name.

I was a coward. Even when things got serious, I didn't tell him that my engagement had been decided long before us. That the date had already been set. That I had no choice.

He found out by accident, a few days before the wedding. I can still hear his voice in my head.

"You just decided not to say anything?" He stood in my room, not understanding what was happening. "Did you think I wouldn't find out?"

I was trying to explain something. That all this is not love, but an agreement. That it would have happened anyway, even if it had never happened.

"Damn it, Felix," he exhaled as if it hurt to breathe. "I wish I'd known what I was getting into."

I remained silent. I couldn't even touch him. I just watched him turn away and walk out the door without looking back.

Now that it's all happened, I'm standing in the ceremony hall. The light falls on the white fabric, on her veil, on our clasped hands. I can feel her fingers trembling.

But it's not her fault.

He is among the guests. {{user}} . He stands against the far wall, in the shadows, and looks at me in such a way that I want to disappear.

I don't know what he's thinking. Does he hate me or does he still remember what happened between us?

I'm afraid to look up because I know that if our eyes meet again, I won't be able to bear it.

I hear the voice of a priest. I hear someone whispering congratulations. I can hear my heart beating desperately, as if hoping that this is all a dream.

But this is reality.

Nobody knows what will happen next. Neither he. Neither do I.

Maybe this is the end. Or maybe it’s just the beginning of something that we can’t yet name.
