Leorio is a tall, manly-looking, muscular young man with brown eyes, black hair, and a spiky haircut. He usually wears a dark blue business suit, black shoes, and a pair of tea-shade sunglasses. Despite his elderly appearance, he was still a teenager at the beginning of the series.

Gon is a young man with black hair tipped with green and large brown eyes. His usual attire consists of a green jacket with reddish edges covering a black or white sleeveless shirt, green shorts, and green lace-up boots. In some arcs, such as the Greed Island and Chimera Ants arcs, he removes his jacket, leaving only the lower part of the suit. In the Greed Island arc and at the beginning of the Chimera Ants arc, he wears the Paladin's Necklace, a Greed Island card with the ability to purge the external effects of a card on the user.

Killua has spiky, white hair and blue eyes. His eyes change depending on what mood he is in, narrowing and sharpening when he enters assassin mode. He is usually in good physical shape, but in the Chimera Ant arc he is seen to have very toned body muscles, especially in his pectorals and abs. In the anime adaptation by Nippon Animation, Killua's eye color is changed to green during the OVAs.

Killua typically wears baggy clothing, his usual attire consisting of long-sleeved, dark-colored shirts. Most of his shirts have turtlenecks. Killua wears long, baggy pants in the manga and Madhouse anime adaptation, but Nippon Animation's design cuts the character down to reach above his knees. Killua also wears blue, brown, and black boots in the Nippon Animation adaptation.

It is a technique that allows a living being to use and manipulate its own life energy (known as Aura). Aura is the life energy produced by all living organisms for survival. The aura of the entire body tends to flow together, producing a mass of energy. This happens without the individual in question being aware of it, usually resulting in a slow leak of aura continually escaping from the body. If one were to lose all of their aura, it would be equivalent to using up all of their life energy, which would be fatal. The pores or points on the body where aura flows from are called Aura Nodes (しょうこう, Shōkō). Controlling these nodes is the first step to being a Nen user.

Kurapika is a Materializer, but by using his scarlet eyes he becomes a Specialist, with the ability to use all branches of Nen to their full potential. On the Materialization side, he can create objects out of thin air, according to his imagination. The weapon he conjures is one to five chains that extend from each finger of his right hand. Some of the chains he designed especially to deal with the Phantom Troupe in order to complete his revenge for the deaths of his people. He is able to hide his chains with "In" in order to trick his opponent without their knowledge until it is too late. Since the chains are materialized, they can be extended to a certain degree. Kurapika is also proficient in all other branches of Nen, suitable for both combat, such as Shu, and analysis, such as Gyo. The repeated use of her scarlet eyes combined with Nen takes a heavy toll on her mind and body, causing her to suffer a crippling high fever that, after Pakunoda's death, lasted for several days and could not be relieved by Melody's flute.

Kurapika has several abilities such as:Scarlet Eyes: When a member of the Kurta clan becomes enraged, their eyes turn a light shade of red. When this happens, their physical strength increases, to the point where even a child could gain the upper hand in terms of speed and strength against three adults, and easily overpower them. In Kurapika's case, when his eyes turn scarlet, his aura also increases and he becomes a specialist, allowing him to activate his Emperor Time. At some point during his search for the eyes of the men of his clan, Kurapika has learned to turn his eyes scarlet at will. Enhanced Perception: Even before learning Nen, he was one of the few Hunter Exam candidates to notice himself being followed by a proctor during the third phase. His first encounter with Mizuken showed that he has a highly developed instinct, as he dodged an acorn imbued with Nen, knowing nothing of the energy within, but understanding at a time when it would have been lethal for him had he been hit. Enhanced Speed and Reflexes: Kurapika hit Uvogin multiple times before he could react and even disappeared out of sight into a space free of hiding places with a jump. He can catch bullets with his chain, which he himself stated can catch a target at a distance of 26 meters in 0.5 seconds. Competent Hand-to-Hand Fighter: While it is unclear if he ever received proper training in martial arts, he was able to land several punches and kicks on a hunter specialized in unarmed combat such as Uvogin with almost no damage on his part.

The Phantom Troupe (幻影旅団, Gen'ei Ryodan), sometimes referred to simply as the Troupe (旅りょ団だん, Ryodan?) in its early days, is a world-renowned gang of thieves who hold the title of an A-class organization. It is also known as the Spider Troupe (旅団クモ, Kumo?) and its members as "Spiders". The group consists of a total of thirteen members, all of whom are highly skilled nen users, each with a numbered tattoo of a spider on their body. Individuals who wish to join the troupe may do so by killing a current member, taking that member's position. If a vacancy opens up due to a member's incapacity or other causes, the troupe's leader, Chrollo Lucilfer, is responsible for replacing them. The Phantom Troupe are the main antagonists of the Yorkshin City arc and secondary antagonists in the series.

Kurapika is a level-headed and intelligent person, possessing extensive knowledge and very critical thinking. He initially keeps his distance from other people after being traumatized by the loss of everyone he loved at the age of twelve, becoming introverted in order to stay focused on achieving his goal. Although outwardly Kurapika claims that he wants to be a Blacklist Hunter and his ultimate goal is to capture the band of thieves who massacred his clan, the Phantom Troupe, deep down he is a fair and kind-hearted person. After becoming a professional Hunter, Kurapika begins a self-destructive path. His anger drives him to commit evil acts. Furthermore, Kurapika's reserved demeanor makes him very ruthless and irrational, but his friends are the only ones capable of making him think rationally in his moments of anger. Even so, he considers his friendships as a weakness that makes it difficult for him to succeed in his goals. As a child, his personality was more similar to Gon's, tending to seek adventures and having an impulsive nature. However, Kurapika still protected his friends, even going so far as to hit a man for his derogatory comments against one of them.

At first glance, Kurapika has a somewhat androgynous appearance, and his physical build is quite small, so his features are rather subtle and youthful. He has blonde hair with light blue eyes, wears a blue tabard decorated with an orange hem and a white full-body training suit underneath. He wears flat shoes. , wears an H on the left side of his jacket. Kurapika wears two earrings but throughout the series only one is shown.
