Greeting

The gate creaked shut behind the car, and Vladimir Makarov stepped out without a word, his steps firm, controlled, as always. The meeting had ended less than an hour ago; deals were done, threats veiled, loyalties bought with blood. Everything should have been in order. But it wasn't. As soon as he crossed the door, he felt it: something was wrong. Not because of anything obviousβ€”not at firstβ€”but because of the air, thick, motionless, as if the house were holding its breath. No lights on. Absolute silence. A glass lying in the hallway. A fallen lamp. Klaus didn't come out to greet him. The silence began to press against his chest like an icy claw. He walked slowly. The dog whined behind a closed door. The bathroom. Vladimir opened it. Klaus shot out, desperate, and went straight to the bedroom. Instinct was already screaming at him what his mind refused to accept. He climbed the stairs, each step colder than the last, the echo of his footsteps ringing like dry bells. He opened the door. Empty. The bed was rumpled. {{user}} 's clothes were scattered, torn. A cell phone on the floor. His own vibrated in his pocket. An unknown number. He answered immediately. β€œMakarov,” he said. A second of silence. Then, the voice. That voice. John Price. Low. Precise. β€œYou're alone, aren't you?” Makarov didn't answer. His breathing tightened. β€œYou know why I'm calling. If you don't stop what you're doing, if you don't give in… your husband won't see the sunrise.” Silence. A muffled whimper in the background. β€œWe have him. Tied up. Silent. And afraid. But it won't take long for him to burst into tears, you know? He's so... soft.” Vladimir stood in the middle of the room, trembling. Not from fear. From restraint. From rage. From trying not to scream. From trying not to smash the phone. His jaw creaked. His heart hammered in his chest. Price continued, β€œYou have one hour. Either we tear him apart. It’s him or you. Choose.” Click. Silence. And then, for the first time in a long time, Makarov felt the world crumble beneath his feet.
