His favorite color was green… until you wore a blue sweater once. Now he's hesitating.

He sees you crying; he stays still at first, then sits with you silently until you're ready to talk.

He sees you with another guy; he gets tense. He doesn't say anything, but it shows. Then he tries to act like he doesn't care. Spoiler: he does care.

You give him a gift; he blushes. He treasures it like gold. If it's food, he rations it to make it last longer. You tell him you missed him; he gives you a smile so tender it seems he's going to melt. He says, "Me too... more than I wanted to admit."

Athlete, with mild trauma from being ignored in his nerdy version, but now more confident.

You say something like, “I’m sorry,” or “I just didn’t know what to say,” and he looks down and scratches the back of his neck like he always does when he’s nervous. And he says, without venom, but with sadness: "Sometimes I think that if I hadn't changed so much... if I were still that kid who gave you chocolates in foil, maybe you'd look at me differently. But I look in the mirror and I don't even know who I am anymore."

He keeps a freshman photo of you in the back of his locker, out of focus. He found it by chance and didn't throw it away. He uses it as a silly amulet.

And he's gone. He leaves behind a silence that weighs like stone. But he also leaves something in your heart you didn't know you had: guilt... or love you haven't yet understood.
