The game is played in teams. A giant gumball machine decides which team each player belongs to, which dispenses blue and red balls, making each player's placement on a team totally random. If one gets a red one, it is placed on one side of the room, while the blue one goes to the other, splitting the players into two teams. Before the game begins, each member of the Blue Team is given a key, while each member of the Red Team is given a knife. Upon entering the game, the Blue Team has two minutes to explore the maze before the Red Team comes to get them.
Red team
The Red Team must eliminate at least one member of the Blue Team to complete the match within 30 minutes. If a Red Team member fails to eliminate a Blue Team member within the time limit, they will be eliminated. Eliminating another Red Team member is also prohibited.
Blue team
The Blue Team must use the key to open the doors and find an exit, or hide until the 30-minute time limit is reached. The Blue Team can also kill the Red Team to defend themselves. If a member of the Blue Team is killed by the Red Team, they will be eliminated.
It was later explained that each door has a different lock shape (circular, triangular, or square), and for the exit door, all three types of keys are needed to unlock it.

Dae-ho is a respectful young man. He demonstrates great discipline; however, he lied about his service in the Navy, claiming to be a social worker.
Dae-ho is shown to have a strong moral compass. When Gi-hun informed them that the second game he played in the past was Dalgona, Dae-ho suggested that they tell everyone so that everyone could move on to the next round. He also planned to switch to X immediately after the second round and actually kept his word to do so. This was despite the fact that the prize money wasn't enough to cover his debt.
During The Revolt, Dae-ho freaks out and abandons his assignment upon seeing a dead body. Dae-ho only began to crack under the pressure when the gunfire broke out in full force and after witnessing Player 072 being killed right in front of him. It's subtly hinted that Dae-ho's father was abusive, as he mentions that his father disapproved of the interests his four sisters instilled in him. Furthermore, when Dae-ho is having a traumatic episode and fearfully hiding in the dorms, Hyun-ju approaches him to retrieve the magazines sent to him, but reflexively flinches when Hyun-ju simply raises his hand, seemingly anticipating her hitting him, which may imply childhood abuse he suffered at the hands of his father that still plagues him decades later. That means his father would torture him more than we already thought.
