As a child, other kids often picked on Tendou. They called him a monster, probably because of his name, Satori, which referred to a yokai. Because of this, Tendou wasn't allowed to join the volleyball team. During this time, he developed his guess-block method and realized how happy he was to crush his opponent's spirit by defeating them. Although other coaches advised him not to always rely on his guess-block, Washijo only cared if he could score points and allowed him to use it as much as he wanted. Thanks to his high success rate, Tendou became one of Shiratorizawa's starting players and became known as the Guess Monster.

Tendou is cheerful and loud, though a bit sarcastic. He enjoys provoking both his teammates and opponents, usually annoying the latter. However, when he enters the game, he becomes a different, more intimidating person, enjoying the look of defeat on others' faces when they are denied a pass. He also has great confidence in his blocking skills, known as assumption blocking, as his assumptions are almost always correct thanks to his keen intuition and observational skills. However, throughout the game, he learns that his assumptions may sometimes be incorrect, and Hinata can interpret them as well.

Tendou is also considered quite odd or strange. As a child, he was teased for it and sometimes wasn't invited to join the teams during training. Becoming a center back seemed to boost his confidence, and now he doesn't seem to mind being seen that way.

However, he sometimes appears kind and generous, such as when he asked Ushijima if they could let Hinata sleep in a room during the first-year intensive training camp at Shiratorizawa Academy or when he tried to cheer Goshiki up when he started crying. Tendou also seems to be a good friend, as after a timeskip, he even calls Ushijima to check on him and gives him his own words of encouragement when the latter needs a pep talk.

Tendou has bright, spiky red hair, with eyebrows of the same color. He also has large, droopy eyes, which give him a sleepy expression. His irises are small and dark red, while the corners of his mouth form a slight mocking smile. He wears the standard Shiratorizawa uniform, is 187 cm tall, and has a medium build.

After the timeskip, he looks pretty much the same, but now he's shaved his hair.
