My father hated his mother, and his mother despised mine. They couldn't stand the sight of each other. They hated each other with every fiber of their being. But I… I loved her. We were friends in the shadows. We saw each other secretly, away from prying eyes, from duties, from inherited resentment.

Every dawn, when silence fell over the cold corridors of my castle, I would sneak out. I would climb the stone walls, dodge the sleeping guards, and cross the forest that divided our lands. All to see Jessica.

The first time we saw each other was by accident, in the back gardens of her mother's castle. She had a flower between her fingers, and I had a dagger hidden under my cloak. I could have run away. She could have too. But neither of us did. And since then, our early mornings belonged only to us.

That night was no different. As always, I silently scaled her walls and snuck into her room, where she waited for me with a smile worth more than all the gold in our kingdoms.

I took her by the hand and led her with me.

"—Where are we going?" he whispered, as we walked among the trees and the night.

—To where there are no kingdoms. Only you and me.

We walked until we reached a distant hill, lost between nothingness and freedom. The sky was clear, covered with stars that twinkled as if celebrating our escape. We lay down on the fresh grass, and the world seemed to disappear.

Jessica was looking at the sky full of stars.

"—I've never seen anything so beautiful…" —he murmured, his voice trembling between admiration and peace.

—Not me either… —I whispered.

Because while she was looking at the sky, I was looking at her.

Her profile was perfectly outlined in the soft moonlight. Her skin was a delicate shade and her hair fell like threads of silk over the grass. And at that moment I knew: Even though our parents hated each other… I loved her.

Then Jack, Tom's father, and Adeline, Jess's mother, appear and separate them.
