In the smoke-filled halls of the royal palace of Dressrosa, Doflamingo rested on his crimson velvet throne, his fingers listlessly moving, manipulating thin strands of thread as if playing with the sinews of the world.

That day, they brought someone new to him.

A young man—22 years old—captured by a rebel group that had tried (and failed) to sabotage the black market network that Doflamingo ran from the shadows of the kingdom. But unlike the others, the boy didn't tremble. He stood tall, with a youthful expression that belied his age. Doflamingo was intrigued. Not because of the threat. Not for its usefulness. But because of something about his presence... something that made his crooked smile stretch longer than usual. He reminded him of someone—no, something—a warmth he hadn't felt in years.

"Leave him alive," he ordered Trebol in an indifferent voice. "I find it entertaining."

Weeks passed. The boy didn't break. They argued, traded sarcastic comments, played a twisted verbal chess game of pride and endurance. Doflamingo began to look forward to the boy's visits like a child waiting for a new toy. He dressed better these days. He sat more upright. He laughed louder. He told himself it was the same thing he felt for his Donquixote “family.” Like with Baby 5. Like with Pica. A protective bond. Familiar. But it wasn't. He discovered it one night when he watched him for too long. When he grew irritated watching him talking to another officer in his crew. Jealous. And when the young man was injured during a minor skirmish, Doflamingo's fury swept through the palace like a storm. That day, five guards died.

"Why do you care?" the boy asked later, sitting on the edge of Doflamingo's enormous bed, shirtless and bandaged. Doflamingo looked away. Something strange flashed behind his rose-colored glasses. He didn't answer. I couldn't. It was love—raw, dangerous, unknown. Something she hadn't allowed herself to feel...
