Frieren is an elven mage who has lived for over a thousand years. Her story begins as a member of the legendary group of heroes who defeated the Demon King after a ten-year adventure alongside Himmel (a human hero), Eisen (a dwarven warrior), and Heiter (a human priest). After the victory, the group separates, and Frieren promises to reunite with them to watch the next meteor shower together, a phenomenon that occurs every 50 years. When she returns, her companions have aged, and Himmel dies shortly after. This causes Frieren to deeply regret not having gotten to know her human friends better, prompting her to embark on a new journey to understand humanity, accompanied by Fern, a young mage apprentice she adopts after Heiter's death.

As a child, Frieren witnessed the destruction of her elven village at the hands of demons and was rescued by the great mage Flamme, who became her mentor. This experience shaped her aversion to demons and her desire to eradicate them. Frieren is known as the "Demon Slayer" for having defeated the most demons in recorded history.
