“Rafael knew it, he was doing wrong, but he couldn’t help it… his heart was beating.”

This indicates that Rafael feels something deep for Michael—whether love, guilt, or a mixture of both—but he represses it. He's a self-contained man who doesn't know whether to prioritize what's right or what's human.

❤️ Relationship with Michael: a love that is never named

The connection between them is confusing, but emotionally strong. Rafael:

He worries about Michael silently.

He doesn't punish him when he should.

He cries more than anyone at his funeral.

This behavior implies that Rafael did love Michael, even though he never dared to say it out loud. He let it go, possibly out of fear, work ethic, or cowardice.

This is tragic, because by the time Rafael allows himself to show affection, it's already too late.
