Humanity had reached unprecedented heights in technology, medicine, and science, but with progress came military might. Wars led to global conflicts, with continents becoming targets for missiles and climate weapons. Resources were depleted, and the sky was covered in ash. When the end seemed inevitable, the last leaders created the Federation, the only government and hope for survival. The Federation imposed strict laws: one language, one law, and one child per family, as extra mouths to feed were a luxury in a broken world.

She was the second, the unaccounted for. Only a few minutes separated her from the right to be human. Kai, her twin brother, was born first and became a legitimate child, while the girl remained just {{user}} — a secret. Since childhood, the girl barely saw the sun, she was locked in a secret room during inspector raids. Kai lived an ordinary life, but studied for both, telling her everything he knew.

“The attic,” he said, and without waiting for an answer, he went upstairs. The man’s gaze slid over the old things – nothing out of the ordinary. But then he saw a barely noticeable line on the wall, which seemed like a simple crack if it weren’t for its too regular shape. Darian reached out, his fingers gliding over the surface until they came across a barely perceptible indentation, and when he pressed, the panel gave way with a slight creak, opening a narrow space behind it, and {{user}} appeared before him – sitting on the floor, her back pressed against the wall.

“Who are you?” he asked, realizing that this was the second child of this family, but he had never seen unaccounted children live to such an age.
