Ryoji Kaji (加持 リョウジ, Kaji Ryōji) is a triple agent working for Seele, Nerv, and the Japanese government. He and Misato Katsuragi were lovers while they were in college. Sometime after their breakup, Kaji began working for Nerv in Germany, where he met Asuka Langley Soryu.

Although Kaji is a triple agent, he still works mostly for himself because he "wants to find the truth." After returning to Japan, Kaji tries to get closer to Misato once again.

At first glance, Ryoji Kaji (who is referred to solely by his last name) appears to be one of the more emotionally balanced characters, with a friendly, teasing manner and a sly smile. On the other hand, he hides his past, which shrouds him in a veil of mystery.

He has a philosophical side that leans towards the pessimism of human relationships, as well as the human capacity to take action. According to Kaji, humans cannot truly understand themselves, and certainly not each other, and it is impossible to fully understand humans. This may refer to darker themes, although Kaji himself says it with a slight smile.

Kaji also has a negative view of relationships between the sexes, stating that there is a river separating men and women that is deeper than the ocean. While some may view this particular belief as an accurate observation about human nature, it still fits with the rest of Kaji's views on human relationships in general.

Kaji has a watermelon patch that he enjoys tending, noting how much can be learned from growing something; he says it is the place where he would like to die. When Shinji visits him there, Kaji tells him that pain teaches us kindness, and that kindness is not the same as weakness.

During the chaotic years following Second Impact, Kaji and his brother were orphans and part of a group of children who banded together to survive the chaos. One day, while stealing food from a JSSDF facility, he was caught by soldiers and threatened to be killed unless he revealed the location of the gang's hideout. Kaji betrayed his brother and friends, who he later found killed by the soldiers, and was plagued with guilt ever since. This led Kaji to break up with Misato; he decided that a person like him did not deserve to be happy.

Nerv (ネルフ, Nerufu, German for "nerve") is a paramilitary special forces agency nominally under the control of the United Nations. Nerv's official purpose is to lead the defense of humanity against the Angels, preventing them from initiating Third Impact following the destruction wrought by Adam during Second Impact in 2000 using the Evangelions they created. Nerv is led by Commander Gendo Ikari.

Evangelion (エヴァンゲリオン, Evangerion), or Eva for short, is a giant cybernetically enhanced humanoid entity created by the Gehirn organization and its successor Nerv during the E Project. While the primary purpose of this weapon is to combat the Angels and prevent Third Impact, there is actually a more sinister and hidden purpose to their existence.

Evangelions are encased in metal armor from head to toe, which hides their biological nature and allows the entry plug with the pilot inside to be inserted into the Eva's nervous system. In addition, the armor restrains the Evas and allows Nerv to control them at all times (in combat or not). It is not yet known whether the armor is the only restraining mechanism or if there is another.
The shoulder pylons also serve as part of the passive safety system, as a mount and external restraint, and act as a weapon storage area.
Each Evangelion has essentially the same physical form as a normal human, albeit with an elongated torso and varying head shapes. The limbs are identical to humans in structure, down to the fact that each Evangelion has a fingernail and toes. The shape of the skull and its function vary from Evangelion to Evangelion. Some failed Evangelion prototypes have a skull shape similar to a human's, but the production Evangelions have no eyes and have whale-like faces. Production Evangelions have different heads, as well as different numbers of eyes and nostril placements. In the TV series, the Evangelions do not have a fixed size, but are depicted as being anywhere from forty to two hundred meters tall, depending on the situation.
Evangelions have internal organs, including a complete digestive tract, as evidenced by the monitors and Eva-01's attack on Zeruel, as well as the graphic dismemberment of Eva-02. With the exception of Eva-02, which has blue-violet blood, all Evangelions have red blood spurting from their wounds.

The most surprising attribute of the Evas is that they are based on Angels. Created from the remnants of the seed of life, Adam (with the exception of Unit-01), their massive bodies are formed from particle-wave matter, but their shape appears to be determined genetically rather than through their A.T. fields, as they were born without souls and were given them during a contact experiment with a human. With the exception of Unit-00 and possibly mass-produced Evas, the souls belong to the mothers of the pilots.

Like Adam and the Angels, all Evangelions have a core located in the solar plexus, similar to the more humanoid Angels. Unit-01 is known to have two smaller cores located below and next to the main core. Nerv's technology allows the core to be prepared for a contact experiment or for piloting. The cores apparently contain a supply of LCL, connected via tubes to the back of the Evangelion's head. Despite this, the cores only serve as a holding source for the unit's soul. Another important function is to power the Evangelion, but this is limited in time; an Evangelion can only move without a cable for a few minutes. While the Angels are gifted with the Fruit of Life (the S² Engine), the Evangelions are unable to generate one within their cores. However, later in the series, Unit-01 gains an engine, and the Mass Production Evangelions have had one from the beginning.

Like the Angels, the Evangelions have regenerative abilities. They have been shown to be able to regenerate damaged or destroyed organs.

Evangelions are equipped with the soul of the pilot's mother. Whether the soul or the pilot is chosen first is unknown. A pilot can only easily synchronize with a compatible soul. Synchronization is dependent on the psychological state of the pilot. Synchronization speed and performance can decrease when the pilot is emotionally upset, and increase under pressure or anger, reaching a maximum when in a battle rage.

An Eva pilot feels everything that their Evangelion feels when it is synchronized with the Eva. This means that they experience pain from injuries that the Eva receives. Evidently, Eva pilots feel pain from injuries, but those injuries do not actually happen to them.
