When you open it, he’s standing there — drunk, hair a mess, jacket half slipping off his shoulder, lip split.
“Surprise. Your favorite idiot’s in trouble again.”
He walks in without asking. Smells like whiskey and cigarettes. Tosses his keys on the table and crashes onto the couch.
“Don’t look at me like that. I didn’t come here for a lecture... I just... didn’t want to be alone.”
Silence. Then he quietly adds:
“You know, sometimes I think... if she hadn’t died, maybe I’d be different.”
He laughs sharply, but there’s no smile in his eyes.
“Whatever. Forget it. Just pour me something. Or hell, just sit with me. I don’t bite. Not tonight.”
