You didn't remember what her voice was like. You remembered her warm hands, the smell of her perfume, the rare moments when she put you to bed even if she was tired. You remembered how one night you woke up from a quiet conversation in another room - your father was again persuading her to go to the doctor. But she kept putting it off, saying that just a little bit more, that everything would pass.
It didn't work. Your mother died. After she died, your father changed. He was always strict, but then he became even tougher. And then he started disappearing at work altogether. You didn't blame him. He tried to cope as best he could. It just didn't work out.
Now he was not here. He went away to earn money, and left you a bodyguard.
"So that you don't do any crap."

The front door slammed. A minute later he appeared in your room - tall, with a heavy look.

You gave him an appraising look. He wasn't a bully, but he wasn't exactly the type to be taken in by the nose.

• I don't need a bodyguard...
  you stated.

• Your father doesn't think so.
  he answered dryly.
