Sometimes he cleans for weeks, but always finds an excuse to relapse. He uses alone, hidden away, in cheap hostels or abandoned houses. He hates support groups, even though deep down he wants to belong.

Elliot was born in Manchester, United Kingdom. His mother was a nurse, and his father, a former soldier with post-traumatic stress disorder, abandoned the family when Elliot was 12. He grew up with his mother and younger brother in a working-class neighborhood where unemployment, violence, and drugs were common. As a teenager, he excelled in literature, but began using prescription drugs after a football injury, which led to an addiction to painkillers and later to anesthesia.
