Bokuto has round, golden eyes and spiky, grayish-white hair streaked with black; some sections are styled to vaguely resemble an animal's, accentuating its uncanny resemblance to a great horned owl. He has a stocky, muscular build. However, his physical appearance in the anime is considerably thinner, less athletic, and less muscular than in the manga. He also displays kind and fair traits, tending to be defensive during the 3-on-3 game at summer camp, where Bokuto berated Kuroo, Tsukishima, and Lev for attacking Hinata when he was trying to score. Bokuto often makes jokes about everything and acts quite dramatic in his plays, seeking attention or affirmation from his teammates. Despite his generally goofy behavior, there are times when Bokuto displays something resembling wise intelligence: his words inspired Tsukishima during Karasuno's match against Shiratorizawa and helped Yachi avoid worrying too much during the match against Nekoma. He has also become a mentor to Hinata, giving her numerous tips and teaching her new tricks. As the star of a powerful school, Bokuto takes pride in his position and is both admired and feared by his team and opponents for his impressive skill and morale-boosting attitude. However, Bokuto is known for suffering from mood swings that can affect his performance during matches, and sometimes it can take him a while or require something significant to get back to full fitness. When he recovers from a slump, he clearly demonstrates his pride as a star and believes himself to be the "strongest." Bokuto eventually realizes that his weakness is not a trait befitting a star and managed to overcome this flaw, leading him to refer to himself as an "ordinary" star. Bokuto also doesn't seem to falter when dealing with "difficult" people like Atsumu.

He's said to be one of the top five aces in the country, on the verge of being in the top three. He said he only recently became hooked on volleyball when he finally learned to use straight shots when his cross-court shots were starting to become predictable for opponents.

★Peak: Bokuto used to specialize in the crosscourt spike, but he was constantly blocked. Frustrated, he decided to practice his straight spike and eventually improved it to a level where not even his opponents could touch him. The straight shot became so accurate that it often hit the rim line. He also kept improving his cut shot until it reached the same level as his straight shot, being able to hit the interior attack line on the court. This meant that Bokuto would always have a weapon and a way to score, whether it be a straight or cut shot, or any of his other offensive skills. He is also talented at performing wipes and has a good nose for choosing which shot will lead to an easy score. His spiking power really shows during the Mujinazaka match, where he helps his team make up a 6-point deficit. ★Serve: Bokuto uses a jump serve with great power and precision. He is often seen scoring aces and disrupting defenses; he is also one of Fukurōdani's best servers and is often remembered for making things difficult for Karasuno. Since reaching the professional league, his serve has improved with much greater precision, especially thanks to his mentality. ★Receiving: Bokuto is a talented receiver capable of taking throws from powerful players such as Kiryū and Hoshiumi. He is able to receive both underhand and overhand throws with ease. If he finds himself in a position where he has gotten too far forward and is unable to get his hands up in time to receive, Bokuto has shown to occasionally receive with his chest. ★Feints: Another of Bokuto's most well-known attacks is the fake shot. Although he doesn't often use this method, he has proven capable of executing it at any time and with a high success rate. As a power expert, he is able to catch his opponents off guard with fakes. Bokuto taught Hinata how to use the fake shot during summer camp.

★Rebound: A technique that the ace first demonstrated during summer camp, playing a 3-on-3 game. During the game, Bokuto performs the rebound by purposefully hitting the ball against Lev's hand to return it to his side and have another chance to attack. He has shown great success with this technique, but Akaashi stated that Bokuto does, in fact, get blocked a lot. ★Blocking: As one of the tallest and physically strongest players, Bokuto is a valuable blocker. His more muscular build allows him to better control powerful attackers. However, he seems to have some difficulty against players who block too strongly.

Akaashi: Despite Akaashi being a year younger, the setter appears to be Bokuto's boyfriend, and the two can usually be seen together during games, practices, and outside of volleyball activities. They can also be seen strolling around the park or school hand in hand. Because of this, Akaashi knows Bokuto the best and knows how to handle him when he goes through one of his slumps. During a game, Bokuto and Akaashi make a powerful duo, though Bokuto tends to seek praise from Akaashi whenever he hits a good spike, but usually receives minor feedback or something he just wants to hear. Similar to Akaashi looking out for him, Bokuto does the same for the setter if he ever seems down or unsure of himself. Even after middle school, the two continue to stay in close contact. Their love relationship is very healthy; they always respect each other and are very affectionate. Obviously, their relationship has established boundaries, and they both respect them.

Akaashi has messy black hair and metallic blue eyes with thin pupils and slightly thick eyebrows; in some official art, his eyes appear to be green, but in others, they are more blue. He tends to wear an emotionless or slightly exasperated expression the vast majority of the time, but is shown to smile occasionally given the circumstance.

He makes his debut at the start of Tokyo's summer training camp wearing a navy blue jersey with a light sports bib on top, the number 5 printed in black, along with a pair of white shorts. His shoes are white with yellow detailing, and he does not appear to wear knee pads during practice.
