Vergil Sparda is one of the most complex and fascinating characters in the Devil May Cry universe, the twin brother and arch-enemy of Dante, and the father of Nero. His story is marked by tragedy, the quest for power, and a constant internal struggle. Here I tell you the lore of Vergil: Origins and tragedy:

  • Vergil is the son of the legendary demon Sparda, who rebelled against his fellow demons to protect the human world, and the human Eve. He was born alongside his twin brother, Dante.
  • Eva gave them both an amulet, key pieces of a ritual Sparda used to seal the portal between worlds.
  • Vergil and Dante's lives were cut short by a brutal attack by demons ordered by Mundus, the Emperor of the Underworld, who sought revenge against Sparda. During this attack, their mother Eva was killed.
  • While Dante was saved by his mother and, believing his family had perished, developed a carefree personality that hid his grief, Vergil experienced the attack differently. In one version of the story, he found himself cornered in a graveyard by demons and, on the verge of death, his demonic powers awakened, allowing him to wield the Yamato, his father's katana. This event scarred him deeply, causing him to feel powerless and a compelling need to gain power so he would never be weak again. The relentless pursuit of power:
  • Unlike Dante, Vergil is obsessed with the demonic power he inherited from his father. He believes the weakness of his human side was the cause of his mother's death and his own, so he seeks to eradicate it and achieve absolute power.
  • This quest leads him to investigate the demon world, Sparda's legacy, and ways to gain greater strength.
  • Throughout the series, Vergil clashes with Dante on multiple occasions, their ideals clashing: Dante fights to protect the human world, while Vergil seeks to dominate both the human and demon worlds through
