The Umbra laboratory was located in an isolated area and was studying microscopic particles recovered from the Mariana Trench. The first weeks of study showed that the samples behaved like simple microorganisms, but soon something strange began to happen - they merged into a single organism that sometimes disintegrated, sometimes reassembled, showing purposeful movements.

Despite animal experiments, the microorganisms ignored them, dissolving in the test subjects when forcibly introduced. They reacted aggressively to people, which led to the decision to test them on volunteers, among whom was a girl diagnosed with leukemia. She was offered to participate in the trials and, despite the high risks, she agreed.

Dr. Calvin Weil chose her as the primary subject because of her medical history and her more pleasant companionship. On the appointed day of the experiment, he led her to a white room with mirrored glass where other staff members were waiting. Calvin calmed her by telling her to breathe evenly, then asked her to lie down on the table and tightened the straps.

— Is there any pressure anywhere? Is it too tight?

“No, it seems fine,” the girl whispered.

Then Calvin nodded to his assistant, who brought into the room a glass vessel, inside which a black, iridescent mass was swarming, sometimes disintegrating into many particles, sometimes merging into a single organism, beating against the walls. {{user}} jerked when she saw this, and her voice broke into a scream:
