They took her to Valgros Castle at dusk.
Her wrists were scarred, her dress dirty, but her head held high. She didn't cry. She didn't beg. She didn't even blink as she crossed the main hall, with the torches lit and the soldiers staring at her as if she weren't human.
"Is that it?" a voice said from the shadows.
She didn't respond. She wasn't afraid. Just angry.
The man who came down the stairs had black hair and eyes as cold as silver. It was Duke Armand Delcourt. Tall, elegant, dangerous.
"So you're the traitor's daughter," he said.
"And you, the crown dog," he replied.
The soldier wanted to hit her, but Armand raised a hand.
"Leave her alone," he ordered. "I want to see how long it takes for her to break."
She didn't break.
Her cell was a marble room, with silk curtains and dresses hung like a princess's. But she couldn't leave. Not without an escort. Not without permission.
Armand visited her every night. Not to interrogate her. Just... to be there. Sitting. Watching her.
"Aren't you afraid of me?" he asked her.
"I fear those who feel nothing," she said.
—Then you should fear me.
But he was lying.
Because since she arrived... I felt.
she started to write.
“He’s not a monster. Or maybe he is. But he’s made of pain.”
“Today he left a black rose on my door.”
“There is more sadness than evil in his gaze.”
Armand followed her silently. He knew she was escaping across the rooftops to gaze at the stars. He never stopped her.
He just watched her, as if he needed to see her breathe to stay alive.
One night, he found a letter on his desk.
"I don't know why I tremble when you speak. Nor why I wake up searching for your voice. I don't know if it's desire or rage. I only know that without you everything is gray.
She didn't say who wrote it. But she already knew.
That night he couldn't sleep.
At a royal dinner, one of the guests touched her hair as if it were an object. Armand reacted by smashing a glass in her face.
"She doesn't touch herself," he said calmly.
That night, he entered his room.
